Uses and Dosage
A healthcare professional administers this medication through an injection into the affected joint, following your doctor’s instructions, typically on a weekly basis. The prescribed dosage is determined based on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment.
Before administering the injection, any excess fluid in the joint may need removal.
Avoid using skin disinfectants containing ammonium salts, such as benzalkonium chloride, for preparing the injection site. Hyaluronate should never be injected into a vein or artery, as it may lead to increased side effects.
Following the injection, refrain from engaging in activities that exert stress on your knee, such as jogging, tennis, heavy lifting, or standing for extended periods, for the initial 48 hours. Post-injection, you may experience heightened pain and swelling in the knee initially. If these symptoms persist or worsen, promptly consult your doctor.
Adhering to the prescribed injection schedule is vital. The full benefits of this medication may take up to three injections to manifest effectively.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- diarrhea
- headache
- itching of the skin
- large, nonelevated blue or purplish patches in the skin
- loss of appetite
- nausea and/or vomiting
- stomach pain
- swelling of the knee

- blue color or flushing or redness of skin
- cough
- difficulty in swallowing
- dizziness or feeling faint (severe)
- fever
- redness or pain at place of injection
- skin rash, hives, and/or itching
- stuffy nose
- swelling of eyelids, face, or lips
- tightness in chest, troubled breathing, and/or wheezing
Caution
- Prior to using hyaluronate, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, including allergies to this medication or other substances. For specific brands, disclose if you are allergic to bird proteins, feathers, or egg products. Some brands may contain inactive ingredients, such as latex in the rubber syringe cap, which could trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
- Before starting this medication, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have had knee joint infections, skin infections/problems around the injection site, or circulation issues in the legs.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only if clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It’s uncertain whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
