Description

Indications

Nilutamide is employed along with surgery for the treatment of prostate cancer. It belongs to a class of medications known as antiandrogens. Its mechanism of action involves blocking the effects of androgen, a male hormone, thereby halting the growth and dissemination of cancer cells.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication orally, with or without food, following your doctor’s instructions, usually once daily.

If you are using nilutamide post-surgery, commence the treatment on the day of surgery or the day after. After 30 days, your doctor typically reduces the dosage.

The prescribed amount is determined by your medical condition and response to the treatment. The duration of treatment is contingent on how your body and the cancer respond to nilutamide, along with other concurrent treatments.

Consistently use this medication to derive optimal benefits, taking it at the same time daily to aid in remembering. Do not discontinue any medications for your prostate cancer unless instructed by your doctor, as stopping them may expedite the spread of cancer.

Since this drug can be absorbed through the skin and lungs, posing a risk to an unborn baby, pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should not handle this medication or inhale the dust from the tablets.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens (e.g., increased difficulty in urination, escalating bone pain).

  • This medication may infrequently induce dizziness, drowsiness, or vision changes. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Refrain from activities requiring alertness or clear vision, such as driving or using machinery, until you can do so safely.
  • You may develop an intolerance to alcohol while taking this medication, so it’s advisable to avoid alcoholic beverages.

FAQ

Do I need to get a surgical castration to use Nilandron?

The purpose of castration is to stop your body from producing testosterone. While Nilandron treats prostate cancer by blocking testosterone from triggering the spread of cancer, it doesn’t stop your body from making testosterone. If you already have high levels of testosterone, it can cause Nilandron to not work as well. Castration (either surgical or medical) is needed to stop your body from making testosterone.

How long do I have to take Nilandron for?

You should take Nilandron as long as instructed by your provider. The length of treatment might differ from person to person. It can depend on the type and stage of prostate cancer you have.
