Description

Indications

Sunscreens serve to shield the skin from the detrimental effects of sunlight, aiding in the prevention of sunburn and premature aging, including the formation of wrinkles and leathery skin. Additionally, they contribute to reducing the risk of skin cancer and sunburn-like reactions induced by certain medications, such as tetracyclines, sulfa drugs, and phenothiazines like chlorpromazine.

Active ingredients in sunscreens function by either absorbing the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation, thereby impeding its penetration into deeper skin layers, or by reflecting the radiation. A variety of sunscreens are available in different forms, including cream, lotion, gel, stick, spray, and lip balm.

Uses and Dosage

Sunscreens are designed for skin application only. Adhere to all instructions provided on the product packaging.

Apply sunscreen liberally to all exposed skin 30 minutes before sun exposure. As a general guideline, use 1 ounce (30 grams) to cover your entire body. Reapply sunscreen after swimming, sweating, towel-drying, or if it has been rubbed off.

For extended outdoor activities, reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.

If using the lip balm form, apply only to the lip area.

The spray form of sunscreen is flammable. Exercise caution by avoiding smoking during application and storing it away from heat or open flame.

When applying sunscreen to the face, take care to avoid contact with the eyes. If sunscreen does come into contact with your eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.

Use sunscreen cautiously or avoid it altogether on irritated skin.

Do not apply sunscreen to infants younger than 6 months unless directed by a doctor. It’s best for infants to remain out of direct sunlight and to wear protective clothing, such as hats and long sleeves/pants, when outdoors.

Seek immediate medical assistance if you develop a severe sunburn or suspect a serious medical issue.
