This medication is employed for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension). By reducing elevated blood pressure, it aids in the prevention of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney issues. The product combines two medications: aliskiren and hydrochlorothiazide. Aliskiren functions by relaxing blood vessels, facilitating smoother blood flow. It falls under the category of drugs known as direct renin inhibitors. Hydrochlorothiazide induces the elimination of excess salt and water from the body by increasing urine production. Commonly referred to as a “water pill” or diuretic, hydrochlorothiazide contributes to the overall antihypertensive effect of the medication.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication orally as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. You can take it with or without food, but it’s essential to choose one method and consistently take the medication the same way with each dose. High-fat foods may reduce the absorption of this drug, so it’s best to avoid taking it with a high-fat meal.
If you take this drug too close to bedtime, you may need to wake up to urinate. It’s best to take this medication at least 4 hours before going to bed.
Avoid taking this medication with fruit juices (such as apple, grapefruit, or orange) as they may decrease its absorption.
If you are also taking certain drugs to lower your cholesterol (bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine, colestipol), take aliskiren/hydrochlorothiazide at least 4 hours before or at least 4 to 6 hours after these medications.
The dosage is determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Take this medication consistently to derive the maximum benefit. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.
Continue taking the medication even if you feel well, as most people with high blood pressure do not experience noticeable symptoms. It may take up to 4 weeks before you fully benefit from this drug.
Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (e.g., if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase).
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- difficulty with moving
- feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
- lack or loss of strength
- muscle stiffness
- sensation of spinning
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- chills
- cough
- diarrhea
- fever
- general feeling of discomfort or illness
- headache
- joint pain
- loss of appetite
- muscle aches and pains
- nausea
- runny nose
- shivering
- sore throat
- sweating
- trouble sleeping
- unusual tiredness or weakness
- vomiting
Caution
- Before taking this product, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to aliskiren or hydrochlorothiazide, or if you have any other allergies. Inactive ingredients in the product may cause allergic reactions or other problems.
- Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, dehydration, untreated electrolyte imbalance, gout, lupus, or skin cancer.
- This drug may induce dizziness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify this effect. Avoid activities requiring alertness, such as driving or using machinery, until you can do so safely.
- Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may lead to dehydration and lightheadedness. Inform your doctor if you experience severe diarrhea or vomiting. To prevent dehydration, drink ample fluids unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
- For individuals with diabetes, this product may impact blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet.
- This product may affect potassium levels. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium.
- The medication may heighten sensitivity to the sun and increase the risk of skin cancer, particularly with prolonged use.
- Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Notify your doctor promptly if you experience sunburn, skin blisters/redness, or notice new or changed moles/skin lesions.
- Older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of this product, particularly dizziness.
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. You should not become pregnant while using this medication, as aliskiren may harm an unborn baby. If you become pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.
- The passage of aliskiren into breast milk is unknown, while hydrochlorothiazide does pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
