Indications
Estradiol spray is indicated for the treatment of menopausal symptoms affecting the vagina and urinary tract, including vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, painful urination, and increased frequency of urination. This medication falls under the category of local estrogen replacement therapy, which specifically targets the affected areas.
Estrogen, a female hormone produced by the ovaries, is the active component of estradiol vaginal ring. Its mechanism of action involves delivering estrogen locally. This medication does not provide sufficient estrogen levels to effectively manage other menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.
Uses and Dosage
When using the spray, maintain an upright position. Following your doctor’s instructions, apply this medication to the clean and dry skin of the inner forearm area once daily, typically in the morning.
If your prescribed dose involves more than one spray, do not exceed a single spray on the same skin area. The application sites should be adjacent to each other without overlapping. Avoid applying this medication to broken or irritated skin, and refrain from using it on other areas of the body, including the breast, face, or in or around the vagina.
The dosage of this medication is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or use this medication more frequently than directed.
After each use, securely replace the cap on the spray. Following application, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. Allow at least 2 minutes for the application site to completely dry before dressing. Do not rub the medication into the skin. Cover the application site with clothing, such as a long-sleeve shirt, to prevent others from touching the treated area and being exposed to the drug. If accidental contact occurs, instruct the individual to promptly wash the contacted area of their body with soap and water. Take precautions to prevent pets from coming into contact with the application site.
To ensure optimal absorption through the skin, wait at least 1 hour before washing the application site.
Consistent use of this medication is essential to achieve the maximum benefits. To aid in remembering, administer it at the same time each day.
Avoid contact with the eyes when applying this medication. In the event of eye exposure, promptly rinse the eyes with warm water and inform your doctor if any eye irritation occurs.
Until completely dry, this medication is flammable. Refrain from smoking or being near an open flame until the medication has dried.
Keep track of the number of sprays used and discard the container after reaching the labeled number of sprays specified on the product package, even if there is remaining medication in the container.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- breast pain or tenderness
- nausea
- headache
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
- changes in sexual desire
- hair loss
- spotty darkening of the skin on the face
- sudden feelings of heat or sweating
- stomach pain or bloating
- swelling, redness, burning, itching, or irritation of the vagina
- vaginal discharge
- painful or difficult urination
- back or joint pain
- runny nose or congestion
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- bulging eyes
- ongoing pain that begins in the stomach area but may spread to the back nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite
- rash, hives, itching, hoarseness, or difficulty breathing or swallowing
- swelling of the eyes, face, tongue, throat, hands, arms, feet, ankles, or lower legs
- fever
- nausea or vomiting
- diarrhea
- muscle pain
- dizziness or fainting
- rash on face or body
Caution
Prior to using estradiol, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any allergies, including allergies to estradiol or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can potentially cause allergic reactions or other complications.
Before initiating treatment with this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, certain types of cancers, blood clots, stroke, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, family history of certain medical conditions (especially breast lumps, cancer, or blood clots), personal or family history of a specific swelling disorder (angioedema), blood clotting disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol/triglyceride levels, obesity, lupus, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), mineral imbalance, a specific hormone disorder (hypoparathyroidism), uterus problems, gallbladder disease, asthma, seizures, migraine headaches, mental/mood disorders, or a specific blood disorder (porphyria).
Refrain from smoking or using tobacco while using estradiol. The combination of estrogens and smoking significantly increases the risk of stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure, and heart attack, particularly in women over the age of 35.
Inform your doctor if you have recently undergone or will be undergoing surgery, or if you will be immobile for an extended period (e.g., long plane flight). These conditions elevate the risk of developing blood clots, particularly when using estrogen products. Your doctor may advise you to temporarily discontinue this medication or take specific precautions.
This drug may cause the appearance of blotchy, dark areas on the face and skin (melasma). Exposure to sunlight may exacerbate this effect. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the use of sunscreen with this medication, as sunscreen may affect the absorption of estradiol if applied to the same skin area where the medication was applied.
If you are nearsighted or wear contact lenses, you may experience vision problems or difficulties wearing your contact lenses. Contact your eye doctor if such problems arise.
Estradiol should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant, promptly inform your doctor.
This medication passes into breast milk and may diminish the quality and quantity of breast milk produced. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Can I shower after applying Evamist?
In order for Evamist to be completely absorbed by your body, wait at least 1 hour after applying your dose before you get the area wet.
Can I apply sunscreen after using Evamist?
It’s better to apply sunscreen an hour before you use Evamist if possible. Applying sunscreen after you use this medication can prevent your body from absorbing the medication properly.
