Sulfacetamide sodium is employed for the treatment of acne. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the growth of specific bacteria on the skin that can exacerbate acne. Sodium sulfacetamide belongs to a class of drugs known as sulfa antibiotics, and it operates by addressing the bacterial component involved in the development of acne.
Uses and Dosage
Make sure to shake the container thoroughly before each use. Using clean hands, apply a thin layer of the lotion to the areas affected by acne as instructed by your doctor, typically twice a day.
After each use, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Take care to avoid contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth when applying this medication. In case the medication does come into contact with these areas, rinse them thoroughly with plenty of water.
Consistent use of this medication is key to maximizing its benefits. Do not use excessive amounts, apply it more frequently, or use it for a longer duration than prescribed. Using larger quantities or prolonging the application won’t expedite the improvement of your condition and might heighten the risk of experiencing side effects.
If your acne doesn’t show signs of improvement after a few weeks, inform your doctor. Cease using this medication and promptly notify your doctor if your acne worsens or if you develop a rash or experience any other serious side effects.

- yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
- joint pain or swelling with fever
- swollen glands
- muscle aches
- chest pain
- vomiting
- unusual thoughts or behavior
- patchy skin color
Caution
- Before using sulfacetamide lotion, disclose to your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, sulfa antibiotics (such as sulfamethoxazole), or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, such as sulfites, which can trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
- Prior to using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history.
- Let your doctor know if there are areas of skin near where this product will be applied that are cut, scraped, burned, or infected. Injured skin may absorb more of this product, potentially increasing the risk of serious side effects.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is uncertain whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
