Indications
Cyproterone functions as an anti-androgen medication targeting natural male sex hormones like testosterone. In men, androgens can contribute to the growth of cancer cells in specific types of prostate cancer. By inhibiting these hormones, cyproterone works to impede or halt cancer growth. In women, androgens can lead to increased hair growth, scalp hair loss, and heightened oil secretion from sweat glands. By blocking these hormones, cyproterone is effective in reducing or preventing these issues.
Uses and Dosage
Follow your doctor’s instructions and take this medication orally, usually 2 to 3 times a day after meals. The prescribed dosage depends on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment.
To maximize the benefits, take this medication consistently at the same times each day. Establishing a routine can help you remember to take it.
Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens, such as experiencing increased difficulty in urination or heightened bone pain.
Due to the potential absorption of the drug through the skin and lungs, pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should avoid handling this medication or inhaling dust from the tablets.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- headache
- heartburn
- hot flashes
- impotence

- reduced (or increased) sexual interest
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- breast lumps
- mental/mood changes (such as new/worsening depression)
- new/worsening bone pain
- fast heartbeat
- rapid weight change
- swelling of the ankles/feet
- increased thirst/urination
- easy bleeding/bruising
Caution
- Before starting cyproterone, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, as this product may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions.
- Discuss your medical history, especially if you have liver disease, kidney disease, depression, blood clots, diabetes, or heart disease (including heart failure, high cholesterol/fats in the blood, or decreased adrenal gland function).
- For individuals with diabetes, be aware that this medication may impact blood sugar levels. Regularly check your blood sugar as directed and promptly report any symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst or urination, to your doctor. Adjustments to your diabetes medication, exercise routine, or diet may be necessary.
- This drug can induce dizziness or fatigue, and the use of alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can exacerbate these effects.
- Refrain from activities requiring alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, and avoid alcohol consumption. Inform your doctor if you are using marijuana, as it may interact with the medication.
- Exercise caution in the sun, as this medication may increase sensitivity. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen along with protective clothing. Notify your doctor promptly if you experience sunburn or skin blisters/redness.
- Cyproterone is not suitable for use in children. It can impact male fertility, so consult your doctor for more details.
- This medication is not for use in those who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Pregnant women should avoid handling the medication or inhaling tablet dust, as it may harm the unborn baby.
- It is unclear whether the drug passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding women should also avoid exposure. Consult your doctor for more information.
