photodune-10425683-grocery-xs

If you have recently been feeling very tired despite having adequate amount of sleep at night, you might have iron deficiency. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that about 10% of the women suffer from iron deficiency and are not even aware of it.

Why Iron Is Important?

Iron is an extremely essential mineral for the human body and is an important component for hemoglobin. This is the substance found in the red blood cells that helps carry oxygen throughout the body. If the iron levels within your body are not sufficient, then you body will not have sufficient oxygen; thereby, resulting in fatigue. Iron is also essential for maintaining healthy hair, nails, and skin.

Iron Deficiency Symptoms

Some of the common symptoms for this deficiency include the following:

  • -Restless legs syndrome
  • -Brittle nails
  • -Chest pain
  • -Cold feet and hands
  • -Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • -Extreme fatigue
  • -Fast heartbeat
  • -Frequent infections
  • -Headache
  • -Soreness or inflammation of your tongue
  • -Pale skin
  • -Poor appetite
  • -Shortness of breath
  • -Unusual cravings for substances like ice, starch, or dirt
  • -Weakness

Five Reasons To Take Iron Supplements

Anemia

Anemia resulting from iron deficiency will result in poor oxygen availability to the body.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women require a lot more iron that those women who are not pregnant. The recommended dosage is 27 mg on a daily basis.

Regular Blood Loss

This applies to people who donate a lot of blood. They may be required to take iron supplement so that their iron levels can stay normal.

Infants

The milk of the mother does not contain sufficient iron. Therefore, babies have excess iron stores to be used for the first six months of life. Premature babies, however, might not have sufficient iron stores and might, therefore, need a special formula containing iron.

Iron Depleting Medication

Some medications are known to deplete iron. In this case, physicians might prescribe iron supplements.

Good Iron Sources

There are certain food sources that contain a lot of iron, and by consuming those foods regularly, you might not need supplements. Here are certain iron rich foods that you should take into consideration:

  • -Beans
  • -Dark green leafy vegetables like spinach
  • -Dried fruit like apricots and raisins
  • -Iron-fortified breads, pastas, and cereals
  • -Peas
  • -Pork
  • -Poultry
  • -Red meat
  • -Seafood

However, before you start any dietary consumption, be sure that you speak to your health professional so that you can make the best choice with regards to your health. Iron deficiency is extremely commonly, but the good news is that it can be treated in most of the cases.

Improve Your Health by Eating Well

Filed under: Health,healthy,healthy diet,healthy eating,healthy foods — Tags: , — robertprice @ 2:49 pm

healthy dietThe expression “You are what you eat”, is completely accurate – your body will utilize the food you eat, regardless of its quality. By changing your diet now, you can begin to improve your health and increase the chances that you’ll be around to play with your great grandchildren. In particular, there are four areas of nutrition that you should ensure that your diet consists of. Those are fruits and veggies, fatty fish, fiber, and protein. Here are the benefits of each:

Fruits and vegetables: They not only taste good, but they also provide high levels of antioxidants. This will help reduce the number of cell-damaging free radicals in your body. Usually, the more vividly colored fruits and vegetables will provide the highest levels of antioxidants. Moreover, fruit is a natural source of sugar. Instead of satisfying your sweet tooth with processed grocery desserts or fattening baked goods, opt for a salad consisting of all of your favorite fruits. Your body will thank you.

Fatty fish: Salmon, sardines, arctic char, tuna, and trout all contain high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oils. Some of the benefits of fish oils are that they can help reduce the chances of a heart attack or stroke. A popular and easy way that many people ensure that are getting enough Omega-3 is through supplements. Just ensure sure you do your research about which supplement will be the best for you.

Fiber: This is essential for regulating the digestive system and for keeping the heart healthy. Fruits and vegetables, of course, often contain hefty amounts of fiber, but you can also find fiber in whole wheat bread and pasta, and nuts.

Protein: Our bodies use protein as building blocks in our bodies. Protein is essential in all aspects of health including protecting yourself against illness, maintaining your weight, and even losing weight. Meat, seafood, and dairy products are all excellent sources of protein and help the body maintain stamina and strength.

It is easy to consume products that will enhance the quality and length of your life. With the right recipes, you do not have to sacrifice taste in order to eat healthier. Once you stop the junk food snacking cycle that is deteriorating your health, your body will feel younger and stronger.

Top 5 Foods for Kidney Health

March is National Kidney Month. In the spirit of promoting kidney health awareness, here are 5 foods that are beneficial to the health of your bean shaped organs.

1. Berries

This includes strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cranberries (pretty much anything that ends in berry). Berries are known to be high in antioxidants and a good source of vitamin C. Antioxidants are important in aiding your body from free radicals that can cause cellular damage. Vitamin C, paired with antioxidants, helps to improve the blood flow and blood pressure throughout your entire body.

2. Turmeric

Easily distinguishable by its poignant golden color, turmeric is considered a wonder herb that is often used in Indian cuisine. This herb aids in the treatment of many health conditions, including kidney disease. It has natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, and antibacterial characteristics (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17569205). With so many health benefits, this herb is a dream come true in helping your body stay healthy.

3. Probiotics

Probiotics are made up of good bacteria. They aid in kidney health by helping to eliminate toxins from our bodies, a job that is usually left up to the kidneys. The bacteria in probiotics are able to accomplish this by consuming waste products and excess fluids in our blood. What is the effect on your kidneys? It’s simple; with the probiotics taking over the kidney functions, the kidneys experience reduced stress.

4. Egg Whites

Adjusting one’s diet to aid their kidney health will help the body function so that it is providing maximum support to the kidneys. A good kidney diet includes protein that provides low levels of phosphorous. Egg whites are the perfect solution for protein in a person who is suffering from kidney disease.

5. Parsley

Parsley is a natural diuretic, meaning it can help increase the amount of urine leaving your body. Why is this good for your kidney health? The more urine that leaves your body, the more sodium and phosphorous that leaves too. When your kidneys are not in good shape, parsley can help them do their job.

What Causes Constipation: The Surprising Truth

causes of constipationIf you live with constipation, you may think that there is nothing that you can do about it. There are many causes of constipation, however, and this means that with a few simple changes to your diet or lifestyle, you may be able to overcome it and feel better. Constipation is not something that people want to talk about, but it is a very real issue that can have a huge effect on your life. What are some of the interesting causes of constipation?

Vitamins

While taking vitamins is not inherently a cause of constipation, the ingredients in some vitamins can be. If your vitamin includes iron or calcium, and you are experiencing constipation, you may want to find another vitamin or consider taking a stool softener.

Chocolate

Eliminate chocolate from your diet if you are having constipation issues. Some studies have found that it can cause constipation, but other studies suggest that it can help. By eliminating it and seeing how you feel, you can determine if it is the problem.

Depression

Depression can lead to a slowing of the body’s processes, including the digestive process. If you have been experiencing some symptoms of depression, you may want to visit your physician to get help for your condition and to help your digestive system to get back to normal.

Blood Pressure and Allergy Medication

Side effects from certain blood pressure and allergy medications can also lead to constipation. Diuretics decrease blood pressure by increasing the amount of urine that is released and this can cause your stool to become harder, as water is being taken from the digestive process. Allergy medications can do this as well.

Antacids

If you have heartburn, you may be taking antacids. Some of them contain calcium and aluminum, which can cause constipation. Check your labels to see if the ones that you have chosen contain these minerals that could be causing your issues.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

There are two chronic conditions that are included in the inflammatory bowel disease category-ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease. While the most common symptom is diarrhea, inflammation of the rectum is common in ulcerative colitis or it could be an obstruction of the intestines in Crohns.

Diabetes

Diabetes can cause nerve damage, which in turn can cause digestion issues. Unfortunately, most people who have diabetes have no clue that they have it, which causes it to get worse. Regular constipation can be an indicator of this disease.

Constipation is not something that you have to live with. Consult your physician to see if any of these issues could be causing your constipation.

Myths about Eyesight: Debunked!

eyesightRemember those old ridiculous myths that parents would tell their children to have them take care of their eyesight? Well, in this article those myths are going to be exposed.

Myth 1: If a person crosses their eyes, they will end up stuck!
FALSE: Although parents have been telling this myth for centuries, it is false. According to Dr. Melson, all that will occur is that the eye muscles will become strained.

Myth 2: Carrots are the only vegetable that will improve eyesight
FALSE: According to Dr. Melson, although carrots are rich in vitamin-a, the vitamin which is crucial for good eyesight, they are not the only foods that maintain good vision. Asparagus, apricots, nectarines and milk are all examples of foods that help maintain good vision. A well balanced diet is beneficial to improving vision.

Myth 3: Reading in dim light will damage your eyesight
FALSE: When you read in dim light, a headache might occur because your eyes are working harder than they normally do. However, there is no prolonged damage to your vision.

Myth 4: Sitting closely to the television will damage your eyesight
FALSE: This would have been true in the 1950s when televisions did not have a screen to protect our eyes from radiation, however, modern televisions have a screen to shield our eyes. One possible effect caused by sitting too close to the television is fatigue in the eyes as they tend to blink less.

Myth 5: Constantly wearing glasses will damage your eyesight
FALSE: The degradation of eyesight is due to an increase in age or genetics and has nothing to do with constantly wearing glasses. In fact, constantly wearing glasses has only changed your perception of how blurry your eyesight was before glasses.

Quinoa: A Rising Health Food Star

Have you made a New Year resolution to eat more consciously? It can be challenging to start eating healthy food. Part of this adventure may include incorporating new foods into your diet. If this is part of your healthy eating plan, you may want to check out the new superfood on the scene: quinoa.

Quinoa (pronounced KEEN-wa) is the seed of a plant called Chenopodium. Chenopodium is related to plants such as beets, chard, and spinach, and its greens can be eaten. However, it is its seeds that are fast gaining popularity and recognition for their health benefits.

Though a relatively recent introduction to North America, quinoa has long been cultivated by indigenous people living in the Andean Mountains of Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. So what makes quinoa so great? Quinoa is an excellent source of nutrition. It contains all 8 essential amino acids, making it a rare example of a complete protein found in the plant world and a good choice for vegetarian and vegan diets. Quinoa is particularly high in lysine, an amino acid that is important for tissue growth and repair. The seed contains a good whack of the minerals magnesium, iron, copper, and phosphorous. These minerals may help ease the symptoms of migraines, diabetes, and atherosclerosis. Quinoa is a source of dietary fiber, which has been shown to reduce the risks of heart disease, colon cancer, and obesity. It is gluten-free and can be used in place of wheat, oats, and other grains. Quinoa is therefore a very good choice for those with celiac disease symptoms.

Quinoa can be found in many regular grocery stores, bulk food stores, at natural food stores. Though its beige and yellow varieties are most common, you can also find red quinoa, and pink, orange, and black colors of the seed. Its flavor has been described as “nutty,” with the seed itself having a creamy texture and its tail a slightly crunchy one when cooked. It is somewhat comparable to couscous or rice.

Quinoa is easy-to-cook and there are many quinoa recipes available such as salad recipes and for breakfast quinoa. When cooking with quinoa, it is best to wash the seeds well to remove the saponins that coat the seeds. It can be cooked in the same way as rice, (one-part grain to two-parts liquid) and there are even recipes for delicious-looking quinoa chocolate cake out there! Creativity and experimentation are what eating well is all about, and quinoa is one super-food you shouldn’t go without. Here’s to a healthy 2011!

Getting Rid of the Clown

For years, Ronald McDonald has been the face of the McDonald’s fast food chain. Recently though, there has been a very serious push to send Ronald into retirement. With the current obesity problem, especially among young children, many people believe it’s time for Ronald to go.

Personally, I’m no big fan of Ronald McDonald, but I also don’t believe he is entirely to blame here. Yes, McDonald’s isn’t the healthiest food for anyone to eat, but that doesn’t mean you should blame the company for your weight problems, or the weight problems your children are now facing. You have to make the decision about your life. If you choose to eat unhealthy all the time, you must be willing to accept the consequences of your actions.

As for those parents placing total blame on the curly haired clown, maybe you should ask who bought the food for your child, who continually gave unhealthy food to your child? Parents need to realize they are responsible for their children as well as themselves. Small children don’t know that eating McDonald’s every day isn’t healthy. We as adults need to explain this to them and control what kinds of food they are eating.

Sure McDonald’s isn’t healthy food, but sitting outside tanning in the sun isn’t either. Pretty soon we’ll be suing the sun for giving us skin cancer. We need to start accepting that maybe something’s are our fault and that we should take some actual responsibility, that’s part of growing up that most of us haven’t been able to understand.

4 Healthy Alternatives to Popcorn

If you’re like me than you have to have some popcorn whenever you decide to go out and rent a movie. However, if you haven’t already noticed, popcorn isn’t the best food for your body to be digesting all the time. Once in a while it’s okay, but when you have it 2-3 times a week, you might want to consider switching to something else. The good news for you (and me) is that there are healthy alternatives to popcorn.

Cauliflower – Cauliflower is a great alternative to popcorn as it is significantly healthier than popcorn. Additionally, it has a similar feel to popcorn if you break the cauliflower into pieces. You can decide to eat cauliflower raw (the way I like it) or you can cook it and even use some dips or seasonings.

Trail Mix – Go out and look for you own ingredients to make your personal brand of trail mix. Make sure your trail mix is unsalted though. By purchasing your own foods for trail mix, you’ll save money in the long run, and you’ll be able to decide everything that goes into you trail mix. Ideas – unsalted peanuts, unsweetened chocolate chips, dried fruit, etc.

Cherry tomatoes or grapes – cherry tomatoes or grapes are a very good alternative to your usual buttery delight. These alternatives are healthy, significantly healthier than popcorn, and will probably make you forget that you’re not eating popcorn. By the time the movie starts, you probably won’t notice or care that you’re not having popcorn.

Apple slices with almond butter – This is one of my favorite things to eat, not just as an alternative to popcorn, but just in general. Apple slices with almond butter are a very healthy choice that will satisfy your need to eat something that’s crunchy, but also salty and sweet.
Hopefully one or more of these things can help you achieve a healthier life. If none of these work you could always try just doing something else with your hands, such as knitting, maybe even fidgeting with a pen or pencil.
