What Everyday Foods Help Control Cholesterol?

High cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is found over your entire body. It aids in the production of cell membranes, some hormones, and vitamin D [1]. There are two kinds of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein). LDL is often referred to as the “bad” cholesterol because it is difficult for the human body to break down its structure. On the other hand, HDL is often considered the “good” cholesterol which the human body consumes to remove cholesterol and plaque from the blood. A large build-up of LDL can cause the arteries to be blocked, which causes chest pain and heart problems.

There are many ways a person can lower their LDL levels and one of the simplest ways is by improving their daily diet. It is vital that a person with high LDL avoid foods high in saturated fats. Foods such as soy, avocadoes, salmon, garlic and spinach are all examples of ingredients that are good for someone trying to reduce their LDL levels.

For people who have high cholesterol, salmon and other cold water fish are especially effective, as they help lower LDL levels and increase HDL levels. Fish are also high in protein and a dinner staple for people with high LDL levels. Also, substituting the kind of oil used in cooking can make a difference in controlling cholesterol. Using avocado oil or olive oil is a much better option than using vegetable oil. Making slight variations like these makes a significant impact on your health as a whole.

Medications for Angina: Lovenox and Lopressor

lovenox_lopressorAmong all of the medications used to treat angina, “Lovenox” and “Lopressor” tend to be the most popular ones. But how well do they fare against one another? And how frequently should they be taken? These are a few of the many questions that we’ll attempt to cover below.

What are Lovenox and Lopressor?

Lovenox is a drug used to treat deep venous thrombosis. Enoxaparin sodium is amongst its active ingredients. Lopressor is a drug used to in blood pressure management and contains two primary active ingredients: metoprolol tartrate and hydrochlorothiazide.

Lovenox vs. Lopressor – How Are They Different?

Both medications are frequently used to treat angina as well as other cardio-related diseases. Let’s take a look at how they differ from one another as well as discuss the various “worries” that patients tend to have about them (and whether or not the chances of experiencing a related side effect is a high probability).

Lopressor

Commonly referred to as “Metoprolol Tartrate” or “Metoprolol”, Lopressor is a drug that can be used for high blood pressure, tachycardia, migraines, heart attacks, and angina. This selective beta blocker is often used to treat a variety of cardiovascular-related diseases- especially hypertension. Some of the more common concerns that individuals have regarding the drug include:

    • Low Blood Pressure: Approximately 9 out of 10 patients claim to worry about low blood pressure when taking Lopressor.
    • Depression: Approximately 9 out of 10 patients claim to be worried about experiencing depression when taking the drug.
    • Weight Loss: Approximately 7 out of 10 patients claim that they frequently worry about losing too much weight as a result of taking Lopressor.

While patients may excessively worry about these side effects, the more common Lopressor side effects experienced include confusion, dizziness, shortness of breath, and unusual sweating. The usual dosage for the drug is typically a 100mg tablet that can be taken several times per day. Dosages of about 450mg of the drug are quite common, while anything over this isn’t recommended as it has yet to be studied thoroughly.

Lovenox

Lovenox is commonly referred to as “Enoxaparin” or “Clexane”, and can be used to treat blood clots, DVT, miscarriages, clotting disorders. A lot of patients use this drug to prevent pulmonary embolisms or deep vein thrombosis. Some of the worries that individuals tend to have about this drug include:

    • Spotting: About 5 out of 10 patients have concerns regarding spotting when taking this drug.
    • Bleeding: About 4 out of 10 patients claim to be worried about internal bleeding as a result of taking Lovenox.
    • Cramping: About 4 out of 10 patients worry about cramping when taking the drug.

Despite these worries, some of the  Lovenox side effects that you may experience include nausea, mild pain, or swelling in the area where the medication was injected. Remember that Lovenox is an injection-based medication, and is highly effective for individuals who have just gotten out of surgery but who still can’t leave their bed.

The specific dosage for the medication depends heavily on the age and health of the patient, as well as their particular diagnosis. For example, someone just getting out of abdominal surgery would require a different dosage than someone getting out of hip surgery.

The Big Differences Between Lovenox and Lopressor

Perhaps the biggest difference between Lovenox and Lopressor are that one is injection based and one comes in tablet form. Both are effective at treating angina and are highly recommended by doctors and physicians alike.

The Causes of Heart Disease In Men: Being Short?

Filed under: heart disease — robertprice @ 6:43 pm

Causes of Heart Disease in MenThere may be more to the causes of heart disease in men than the commonly accepted culprits like obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. A new study of 22,000 male doctors suggests.

Dr. Luc Djousse of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston and his colleagues found that the taller men were, the lower their chance of developing congestive heart failure.

After responding to an initial questionnaire that asked about their height, weight, and health conditions, men filled out follow-up surveys which asked about new medical diagnosis each year. The report includes information from an average of 22 years of that previously described follow-up, during which 1,444 men, or about seven percent, developed congestive heart failure—that is, when the heart is not strong enough to pump blood out to the rest of the body, or when the heart does not fully relax after each beat.

The tallest men in the study, those over six feet, were 24 percent less likely to report a heart failure diagnosis during the study period than men who were five feet, eight inches, or shorter. This observation was made after the men’s age and weight, as well as whether or not they had high blood pressure or diabetes, had been taken into account.

This certainly does not mean, or should be taken to suggest that a few extra inches of height protects against heart disease in men, or that shorter men are decidedly doomed.

It is important to note that even with those considerations, the study can’t prove that something else wasn’t behind the relationship between height and heart failure risk, according to Jeffery Teuteberg, a cardiologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who was not involved in the study.
“From a day-to-day consideration, it’s not something we take into a big consideration when we’re thinking about risk.”

Dr. Claudia Langenberg, from University College London, thinks that “height” on its own may, in fact, point towards other factors. She told Reuters Health in an email that “despite its strong genetic determination, height is very sensitive to the influence of socio-economic influences on growth.”

In other words, while doctors usually end up in the same income bracket, the income bracket they grew up in could have a correlation here. Height could point towards a more privileged and healthy early life than some of the shorter doctors.

Djousse also suggested that childhood infections could both stunt growth and ultimately lead to plaque build-up in the arteries and high blood pressure, which is tied to heart failure.

“As much as we know about the development of very common diseases like heart failure, there’s still a lot we don’t know. All of the traditional risk factors we think of — there’s still a lot more that impacts the development of those diseases beyond those things,” Teuteberg stated.

It certainly seems possible to suggest that height, itself, does belong on the list of possible causes for a heart attack, but researchers agreed that, at the very least, the things should not concern or relieve anyone based on their height.

Teuteberg states: “This (finding) may lead to something much more interesting down the line.”

Young People and Heart Disease

Young men and women need to be aware that they too are at risk of heart disease. A new study indicates that young men and women are often under diagnosed for heart disease.  In fact, even though rates of high cholesterol among the women and younger men were similar to the rate in older men, those two groups of patients were nearly half as likely (10 percent vs. 19 percent) to be taking cholesterol-lowering drugs prior to their heart attack and were much less likely to be on aspirin for high blood pressure and other combination therapy.

Alarmingly, as Dr. Michael Miedema notes, “if you’re an older male, you’re much more likely to qualify for preventive therapy while females and younger males often do not meet criteria despite similar risk factors.”  Online at-risk cardiac calculators, which weigh factors such as age and gender, usually indicate older people are more at risk for heart attacks.  However, it is becoming more and more evident that young people are just as at risk!

Signs that you may have high cholesterol and may be at risk of a heart attack:

  1. You should monitor your blood sugar levels, your blood pressure levels, and your cholesterol levels, to see if any one of these levels is high.
  2. Obesity is strongly associated with elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
  3. If you have a relative with heart disease, you should monitor your heart health, no matter what your age.
  4. Some races are stereotypically more at risk for certain heart related conditions.  For example, African Americans are more susceptible to both heart disease and high cholesterol.

If you fall into one or more of these categories, you should talk to your health care provider to potentially begin aggressive therapy.  Therapy includes such initiatives as following a weight loss program, making healthier diet choices, and taking aspirin and Statins.  The latter is a category of cholesterol drugs.  The most popular drug used to treat high cholesterol is Lipitor.  You can buy Lipitor at CanDrugstore.com.

Health Concern over BPA Exposure

Filed under: diabetes,heart disease,plastic bottles — Tags: , , , , , — robertprice @ 4:25 pm

water bottle, BPA, BPA free, waterBisphenol A, also known as BPA, is an industrial chemical that is used in the manufacturing of many products that we use every day. This chemical is most commonly found in hard plastics, including food storage containers, plastic bottles, dental sealants, toys and the linings of food cans. Recent concern has arisen over the effects of prolonged exposure to BPA, after a cross-sectional study revealed that those with high BPA exposure have an increased the risk of heart disease and diabetes, while another study links BPA to liver damage and hormonal interference leading to obesity.

The Canadian government has already taken steps to limit BPA exposure to infants. In 2008, Canada was the first country to ban the use of baby bottles containing BPA, and additionally labeled BPA as a toxic chemical. However, there are still many products available in Canada that contain BPA, such as CDs, DVDs, water bottles and food cans. Before BPA can be phased out from the manufacturing process of Canadian products, more research must be accumulated in order to officially determine BPA as a dangerous substance. Luckily, that time is coming soon, as the Food and Drug Association has partnered with the US Department of Health and Human Services and additionally the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health intend to launch a thirty million dollar research initiative to observe the health implications of BPA exposure.

Until that time comes, there are several ways that you can help to reduce your exposure to BPA chemicals, from eating fresh foods to refraining from microwaving food in plastic containers. When buying new plastic containers for water or food storage, make sure that the products that you are buying are BPA-free. Many plastic-manufacturers have recently begun to develop BPA-free products in response to consumer requests. If you’re wondering whether your current plastic-ware is BPA-free, you can identify the type of plastic by the recycling number on the bottom of the container. Numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5 are all guaranteed to be free of BPA and are safe for both you and your family to use. Reducing your exposure to BPA now may prove to an important and extremely beneficial decision, as it will reduce your risk of developing heart disease, liver problems and diabetes, while vastly improving your quality of life overall.

Health Benefits of Eating Tofu

Filed under: cholesterol,heart disease,osteoporosis,protein,tofu,Uncategorized — robertprice @ 2:27 pm

Tofu is a soft cheeselike food made of curdled soybean milk. It is low in fat, and is a very low-calorie food with numerous health benefits for the body. However, the majority of people do not eat tofu because they do not like the taste of it or are too afraid to try it because of its texture. Formost, tofu is an acquired taste. It definitely is worth it.

Tofu contains an immense amount of nutrients. Protein is one of the most important, especially inregards to vegetarians who do not get their protein from meat. The protein from tofu is even better than some meats, making it a fantastic alternative. Think about how much less fat you are consuming! For all those people who want to become more muscular or “buff” as they say it, this is perfect for you.

Not only is it a great source of protein, but tofu is also an exceptional source of iron, copper, omega-3 fats, selenium, and calcium. The calcium in tofu helps prevent osteoporosis. Eating tofu in general because of all its components has shown a lower risk of getting cancer.

Furthermore, tofu can lessen the chance of getting heart disease. It does this by reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) which is cholesterol that is not good for the body, while maintaininglevels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) which is essentially “good” cholesterol. All in all, tofu can reduce LDL by 35% to 40%.

You know the benefits it has, so try it for yourself. There are numerous flavors and textures in which you can buy tofu, so see what works for you.

Food Addiction Very Serious In America

When someone mentions an addict most of us will probably imagine a junky shooting up in some dark corner of town, but what about those that are addicted to food? Yes food can become quite addictive and certain diets may actually affect your brain in a way that is similar to that of many hardcore drugs.

High fat, high calorie junk foods can become very addictive, and this not only leads to mental problems, but it is also a reason for the rising obesity rate in the States. Along with the unbelievably high rates of obesity, Americans are becoming more likely to develop diabetes, heart disease, and strokes.

A study on rats showed that the high fat, high calorie diet showed similar signs drugs like heroin. These foods satisfy the pleasure center in the brain and after awhile of eating this type of diet, eating becomes compulsive. In fact, even electric shocks were unable to stop their eating. The addiction had developed to the point where they would keep eating despite obvious pain as the joy they obtained from eating would outweigh the pain of the shocks.

While I don’t think that Americans are going to have as much difficulty with food addiction that rats do, I do think that many Americans will not only gain a significant amount of weight and endanger their health; I believe that once that weight is put on, it will be more difficult to lose that weight than ever before.

It’s Good to Have Big Thighs

A recent discovery by the research team at Oxford found that junk in the trunk is good for the heart and can lengthen your life. Having a large abdomen and stomach makes people more prone to heart disease, but people with small tummies and large bottoms and thighs experience the opposite effect. The exact measurements of the perfect thighs are anything close to, but slightly exceeding 23.6 inches.

Too much fat is a concern. When there is too much fat around the hips and thighs it may cause Cushing’s syndrome, diabetes, high blood pressure, or mood swings. A good body type is a pear shape. Pear-shaped people have lower inflammatory cytokine levels. This means that their body responds to infections which may cause diabetes, insulin resistance, or heart disease positively, and works to prevent the infections. An apple shaped body is the worst shape to have, as it raises both the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Fat on the thighs and bottom stores fatty acids. Fat on the legs also keeps people from overwhelming the body when they overeat. Leg-fat produces leptin, which affects metabolism positively. It is also been proven that having not enough fat in your backside and thighs can cause metabolic problems. It is harder to lose or gain weight around that thighs and backside. Hip fat also promotes better blood sugar control (linked to avoiding diabetes) and fat burning.

An ideal person would have fat thighs, and a slim tummy, which is unfortunately very rare and difficult. Normally you get fat thighs and a fat tummy, not one or the other.

What Will You Die From and When?

Ever wanted to know when you were going to die so you could have a chance to say your final good bye’s? Well maybe we’re getting one step closer. A new calculation machine has been developed to tell you what your chance of dying is, what age you’ll die, and what you are most likely to die from.

This new calculator of death is found on http://www.deathriskrankings.com and to be completely honest, it is a lot of fun to play around with it. You have a few options to choose from, such as your age group, race, location, gender, etc.

The device was designed by many specialists that hold Ph.D.’s in things like economics, engineering, environmental safety, health safety, software application and design, risk analysis, etc. The team that built the death risk ranking system is definitely a group of very qualified people that have devoted a life time worth of work and research and now get another way to demonstrate their abilities.

Overall, the calculator is a fun new tool to show us just how easily and how likely it is for one of us to just be taken from the living, with relative ease I might add. If the accidents don’t get you then heart disease, or a homicide probably will. At least that is my outlook. Not too bright, but I’ll try and stay away from oncoming traffic, McDonald’s, and dark alleyways. I think that sounds like a pretty good idea, guess I’ll have to wait and see how well it works.

Cancer, A Winning Battle

Filed under: cancer,cancer treatment,death,heart disease,leukemia,lymphoma,Uncategorized — robertprice @ 10:46 am

Cancer is expected to overtake heart disease as the leading cause for death in 2010, but are these kind of statistics misleading? Well to put it simply, yes. The rate of deaths caused by cancer have been decreasing steadily for many years now. Due to the new steps in prevention, detection, and treatment, we have witnessed a constant decline for the past 30 or so years. Many of the younger groups have experienced the greatest drop in deaths related to cancer. So why is cancer going to overtake heart disease as the number 1 killer?

Although the statistics are right and cancer will be public enemy number 1, the statistics can be misleading in ways. Heart disease will cease to be the number 1 killer only because the rate of deaths by heart disease are lowering even faster than the decline of cancer deaths.

Many people in the general public are unaware of this because it is not heavily publicized. Most people just watch the news which has, for the most part, changed to report the most interesting events, not always the most important events. Due to this lack of broadcasting a great number of people still believe that we are losing the battle against cancer even though we’ve been gaining ground for more than 3 decades.

Here are some interesting statistics that every should see:

  • Since the early 1950s, age-specific cancer death rates have been falling steadily, starting first with children and young adults, and then eventually across all age groups.
  • Apart from lung cancer, much of this falling trend has taken place despite the fact that numbers of cases (incidence) has remained steady.
  • From the middle to the end of the 20th century, for people born between 1925 and 1934, then between 1935 and 1944, and so on, every ten years until 1995, there has been a lower risk of cancer death in each birth decade compared to the previous decade for nearly every age group.
  • The youngest age groups have experienced the steepest decline at 25.9 percent per decade, but even the oldest groups have experienced a 6.8 percent per decade decline.
