Healthy Eating Tips for 2011

A very popular new year’s resolution seems to be to lose weight. Without the proper technique, losing weight and staying healthy can be quite a pain. If you are one of those people looking to lose weight this year, be sure to follow these tips.

–  Slow Down! Eating food too quickly can cause you to eat too much, and you can end up feeling sick because of it. Simply breathing in between bites can cut down your calorie intake drastically. In fact, it takes your brain approximately twenty minutes to realize that you have had enough to eat.

Eating at Restaurants. Restaurants are surprisingly generous with the amount they serve out, likely too generous. Most people don’t realize how large the portions are and they end up eating it all. Be sure to understand how much food you are actually eating, no one wants to waste money, or food; so be sure to bring some home for another meal. Furthermore, alcohol is a bad choice of beverage with dinner as it tends to make people feel hungry. If it you can’t help yourself, limit alcohol intake to one or two glasses.

Office Food. If you work at an office, there is a good chance someone will bring in food for co-workers to enjoy, but beware of these nice gestures. Cakes, cookies, and other goodies can account for up to twenty of the pounds you may put on this year. Be sure to keep an eye on how much of these treats you enjoy!

Snacking. Be sure to keep an eye on how much of this you do. For example, sitting in front of the TV with a bag of chips will lead to weight gain. If you’re in the mood for an unhealthy snack, grab a bowl and decide for yourself what the right portion is. Be sure to remember that even though you are dieting, you can still indulge a little bit from time to time.

Challenge yourself! Try setting some realistic goals for yourself; whether it be losing a certain amount in a set time period, or eating less of a certain type of food. Having a competition with yourself or even a friend is also a great way to keep yourself on track.

Lastly, remember that eating healthy doesn’t have to mean not enjoying your food. Try looking up a new healthy recipe every once in a while. Who knows, you might just surprise yourself!

Lose Weight by Drinking Water

A recent study conducted in Virginia claims that drinking water before meals can actually aid in losing weight. It was found that if a person drinks two glasses of water before each meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) they will lose approximately five pounds more than someone who did not use this technique when dieting.

Water is essential for the body. Drinking it is not only beneficial for dieters but also for people looking to maintain their current condition. For those looking to establish a healthy meal plan water acts as a great substitute for all those sugar packed drinks. Not only does water make a person feel fuller but also does not have any calories. Unlike your sugary drinks which will make you crave more, water will actually quench your thirst.

Forty-eight people from the ages of fifty-five to seventy-five were observed for a period of twelve weeks. The forty-eight people were split into groups of two. One drank two glasses of water before each meal and the other did not. All other factors were controlled and as similar to each other as possible.

The result of this was that the group of people that did not drink water before meals lost an average of eleven pounds whereas the others lost an average of fifteen and a half pounds. This is quite a significant difference in comparison o the small change that was made- water consumption.

It is important to remember that even though drinking water can help lose weight. Drinking too much water can lead to very serious health conditions or even death.

Thin Out Your Chipmunk Cheeks

Puffy cheeks are not something anyone wants. Unfortunately for some people, when a few pounds are added to the abdomen, a few pounds are added to the face. Thankfully there are a couple positive things about face fat. First: people who gain their fat on their abdomen rather than on their faces have a higher risk for many diseases such as diabetes, gallbladder disease, arthritis, and various other conditions.  Second: you aren’t alone! John Travolta and Jason Alexander and many others pack on pounds to the face.  Also, there are a few things you can do to bid goodbye to your chipmunk cheeks.

  1. Exercise – That’s a given. If you want to lose any weight, anywhere, you’ve got to exercise. Power walking, jogging, and running and other aerobics can help purge those pounds.
  2. Drink Water – Drink 8 glasses of water per day. If you deprive your body of water it could cause bloating, which just adds to the size of your face.
  3. Reduce salt – Salt causes water retention. If this water retention occurs in your face it will give you a bloated look. Reduce the amount of salt in your food.
  4. Get a massage – Have a facial massage at a spa. This will increase your faces metabolism and reduce the amount of fat. If a massage is too expensive try doing it yourself or with girlfriends. Always massage upward in strokes!
  5. Face Exercises – While looking in a mirror make an overemphasized smile, but keep your lips closed. Smile as wide as you can as if the corners of your mouth are trying to touch your ears. Do this for 8 seconds, then relax and repeat.

Another face exercise you can do to reduce fat is as follows: keeping your mouth closed, puff your left cheek out with air, hold this for 8 seconds and then do the same to your left cheek. Repeat this 5 times.

If you have a double chin you can try these exercises:

  1. Chin Taps – Tap your chin with the backside of your hand. Do this for as long as you can bear.
  2. Chewing gum – The chewing movement forces you to move your jaw a lot, without the downside of calories (which you would have if eating a meal).
  3. Good posture – Keep good posture while sitting and standing. Bad posture can give your muscles too much slack and cause loose skin.
  4. Platysma – The platysma muscle, when exercised can help rid of a double chin. Open your mouth and pull your bottom lip over your bottom teeth. Move your jaw up and down continuously. This exercise is called the shovel and despite its absurdity it will work if you do it on a daily basis.
