The ABC 20/20 Report—Not All Online Pharmacies Are Rogue

P

An ABC 20/20 report recently came out and it comprehensively covered the safety of online purchasing mechanisms. It also featured how Big Pharma had joined forces with ASOP, LegitScript, and NABP to let the public know that almost all of the prescription purchases made online were completely unsafe. However, the evidence reveals something else completely. Here are a few things that you should know about:

There Are Many Existing Legitimate Online Pharmacies

While rogues are in existence, this does not mean that there are no legitimate online pharmacies. There was a study carried out by the National Bureau of Economic Research, and this study supported that there are many legitimate online pharmacies around. However, knowing that rogue online pharmacies exist as well, people need to be careful. And here are a few ways in which they can take precautionary methods:

  1. Never purchase from an online pharmacy that does not ask regarding the drugs you are using or your personal health history
  2. Never purchase from an online pharmacy not having a telephone number or physical location
  3. Never purchase from an online pharmacy not requiring a valid prescription
  4. Never purchase from an online pharmacy not licensed by government or provincial licensing body

The CIPA website will be able to verify online pharmacies for you so you can always check there to be sure.

Unknown Impurities, Active Ingredients, and Inactive Ingredients

It is still yet to be determined who verified the reports stating that the unknown impurities that were tested were actually harmful. It is also not yet known what these unknown impurities were that were found in the analysis in the 20/20 report.

All medications consist of two components, i.e. active ingredients and inactive ingredients. The active ingredients are what make the medication perform up to its expectations. Inactive ingredients, on the other hand, are binders, colorants, or fillers and are completely inert in nature. Different companies offering the same drug will have the same active ingredients but their inactive ingredients can differ at times. Big Pharma has taken this knowledge and used it to its advantage.

However, people should know that legitimate, affordable, and safe medications are available through online means from properly licensed and verified Canadian Pharmacies.

How Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation (CPPI) is helping Americans get access to affordable prescribed medication

Vertical set of prescription drug bottles

CPPI, or Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation, is a nonprofit and national consumer and patient advocacy organization. It makes sure to engage their target audiences in promoting and protecting their need for affordable and safe prescription medications that have been imported from Canada for personal use for the duration of 90 days. The target audience for CPPI includes the seniors and other similar members who are residing in America on a fixed income basis along with the low income earning group. These individuals want surety that they will be receiving affordable alternative for prescription drugs that are sold at a high cost within the United States.

The Burden Of High Costs In Medications

Branded drugs that are available within the United States normally cost a great deal of money, and due to this reason, serious health risks to the general population in the country have arisen. About 35 million individuals living in America have failed to adhere to the schedule of their prescription drugs due to the increased cost of these medications. This means that many people are splitting medicines, forgoing their consumption completely, or skipping their doses since they do not know what else to do. Such actions have been causing a huge burden to the following entities:

The US Healthcare System

The US healthcare system faces a burden due to the health issues that arise as a result of non adherence. These could be both primary and secondary in nature and could cost a whooping $290 million in health care expenses that would not even have been needed in the first place.
The Family Members Of The Individual
The caregivers of the individual also have to face numerous issues when they are deciding on the health care options. These are the individuals who are responsible for the physical and financial aspects of health care, and these include maintenance drugs as well.

The American Taxpayer

Many of the people importing their medicines from the licensed pharmacies in Canada happen to be on Medicaid or Medicare. When the people will not be able to afford healthcare drugs, it will lead to further health complications that could have otherwise been avoided. This will end up affecting the governmental healthcare programs as well as the taxpayers in turn.

The Solution

The CDC or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that more than 5 million people acquire their prescription drugs from outside the United States. Also, around 1 million people residing in the US would purchase their prescription drugs from licensed pharmacies in Canada because of the affordable rates. Every American should have access to affordable medicines and Congress can help in making a drastic change in this regard by giving access to prescriptions from licensed and legitimate pharmacies in Canada. Bipartisan legislation is one such legislation that has come up many times for years in order to address the issue using common sense and logic. And this is exactly what CPPI is trying to promote.

Prescription Drug Spending Is Increasing

Prescription Drug spendingPrescription drug spending has been steadily increasing over the years, and according to the United States government, it is expected to continue increasing until at least 2022. Projections calculated by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) predict a steady increase of 6.5 percent over the next seven years.

This prediction is believed to hold true, even though 2012 showed a decline of 0.8 percent in prescription drug spending. Most experts contribute this decrease to the fact that many high-priced brand named prescriptions’ patent protection ended in 2012. This led to an increase in less expensive generic brand versions on the market.

Causes for Increased Spending

There are several factors that are believed to spur the prescription drug purchasing. First, more and more baby boomers are heading into their retirement years, typically with more health issues and the increased need for prescriptions. Retirement also allows people to sign up for Medicare, which may give a person better insurance coverage than they did when they were working. This makes people more likely to go to the doctor and purchase prescriptions. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) signed into law in March 2011 is also expected to help more people afford health care and prescriptions.

Lower Out-of-Pocket Expense

The good news is that along with the increase in prescription drug spending, the out-of-pocket expense for the average person is expected to decrease in the coming years. Studies suggest that the current 11.4 out-of-pocket percentage may drop as low at 9.1 percent by the year 2022. This decrease in overall costs to the consumer is directly attributed to the Affordable Care Act.

The changes the ACA act made to Medicare alone has saved the consumers a total of seven billion dollar since its inception in March 2011. The fact that millions of American who could not afford health care, or did not want health care, now have a variety of health care programs to choose from, will certainly reduce the out-of-pocket expenses for nearly everyone.

While it is startling to see the continuous rise in prescription drug spending, it is good to realize that for the majority of Americans, the price they need to contribute towards these drugs is likely to decease. As more people begin to purchase prescription drugs, it is also likely that the pharmaceutical companies will put more money into the development of additional types of prescriptions. This will also be a likely contributor to the increase in prescription drug spending.
