Indications
Estradiol topical gel is prescribed for the treatment and prevention of hot flushes, characterized by sudden intense sensations of heat and profuse sweating, occurring in women during menopause. Estradiol topical gel is additionally utilized to alleviate vaginal dryness, itching, and burning experienced by menopausal women. Estradiol belongs to a class of pharmaceuticals known as estrogen hormones, which function by substituting the natural estrogen typically produced by the body.
Uses and Dosage
Apply the medication to clean and dry skin on the upper thigh area, typically once daily. Alternate between the right and left thigh with each application.
Avoid using this medication on broken or irritated skin, and it should not be applied to the breast, face, or in or around the vaginal area. Ensure that only you apply the medication to your body, and do not allow others to do so.
The dosage of the medication is determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or use the medication more frequently than instructed.
After applying the medication, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water to minimize the risk of unintentionally spreading it to others. Allow the application site to fully dry before dressing, and consider covering it with clothing, such as shorts or pants, to prevent others from coming into contact with the application area and being exposed to the drug. Wait at least 1 hour before allowing anyone else to touch the skin where the medication was applied. In the event that someone accidentally touches the gel or the application area within 1 hour, advise them to promptly wash the affected area with soap and water.
To ensure optimal effectiveness, wait for at least 1 hour before showering or swimming to allow the drug to be absorbed through the skin.
Consistently use this medication to derive the maximum benefit. To aid in remembering, administer it at the same time each day.
Avoid contact of this medication with the eyes. If it comes into contact with the eyes, promptly rinse them with warm water. Inform your doctor if you experience any eye irritation.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- headache
- breast pain or tenderness
- nausea
- diarrhea
- constipation
- gas
- heartburn
- weight gain or loss
- mood changes
- depression
- nervousness
- sleepiness
- difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
- changes in sexual desire

- hair loss
- unwanted hair growth
- darkening of the skin on the face
- difficulty wearing contact lenses
- irritation or redness of the skin where you applied topical estradiol
- swelling, redness, burning, irritation, or itching of the vagina
- vaginal discharge
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- bulging eyes
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- itching
- loss of appetite
- fever
- joint pain
- stomach tenderness, pain, or swelling
- movements that are difficult to control
- hives
- rash or blisters on the skin
- swelling, of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, throat, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
- hoarseness
- wheezing
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
Caution
Prior to initiating the use of estradiol, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies you may have, including allergies to estradiol or other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of vaginal bleeding with an unknown cause, certain cancers, blood clotting disorders, stroke, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, a family history of specific conditions (such as breast lumps, cancer, or blood clots), a personal or family history of angioedema (a swelling disorder), blood clotting disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, obesity, lupus, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), mineral imbalances, a certain hormone-related condition (hypoparathyroidism), uterine problems, gallbladder disease, asthma, seizures, migraine headaches, mental or mood disorders, or a specific blood disorder (porphyria).
Do not smoke or use tobacco products while using estradiol. The combination of estrogens and smoking significantly increases the risk of stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure, and heart attacks, particularly in women aged 35 and above.
Inform your doctor if you have recently undergone surgery, are scheduled to have surgery, or anticipate being immobile for an extended period, such as during a long plane flight. These circumstances elevate the risk of developing blood clots, especially when using estrogen-based products. In certain situations, you may need to discontinue this medication temporarily or take special precautions.
This medication may cause the appearance of blotchy, dark areas on the face and skin, a condition known as melasma. Exposure to sunlight can worsen this effect. Limit your sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding the use of sunscreen in conjunction with this medication. Applying sunscreen to the same area of the skin where the medication was applied may affect its absorption.
If you are nearsighted or wear contact lenses, you may experience vision problems or difficulty wearing contact lenses while using this medication. Contact your eye doctor if you encounter such issues.
This product is not intended for use in children. Accidental exposure of children to the areas where the medication has been applied can result in undesired side effects. Children should avoid contact with any uncovered area where the medication has been applied. Notify the doctor immediately if you observe unexpected signs of puberty in a child, such as an increase in breast or nipple size. To minimize this risk, carefully follow all instructions regarding the proper use of this medication.
This medication should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant, inform your doctor without delay.
Estradiol passes into breast milk and may reduce the quality and quantity of breast milk produced. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using this medication.
