Drug Description:
Vagifem (estradiol) vaginal tablet is a prescription medicine used to treat dryness, burning, and irritation of the vagina (atrophic vaginitis) caused by menopause. It could either be used alone or with other medications to replenish estrogen lost during menopause.
This drug’s mechanism of action is reducing the elevated levels of gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone in post-menopausal women through a negative feedback mechanism. Thus, it maintains the equilibrium of the female reproductive system and secondary sexual characteristics.
Directions
Before starting to use Vagifem tablets, make sure to read the medication and prescription guide provided. Use it as prescribed by your physician. This is available in Vagifem 10mcg and Vagifem 25mcg tablets.
Use this medication regularly and as directed by your physician to achieve full benefits. Do not increase or decrease your dose unless advised by a healthcare provider. Follow a dosing schedule to avoid missing a dose.
Here are the steps in using Vagifem vaginal tablet:
- Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before using Vagifem.
- Tear off the applicator pack to open. Take the applicator out of the plastic pack and hold it in a way that the index finger of your dominant hand can push the plunger.
- Assume a comfortable position for the insertion of Vagifem. Using your other hand, guide the applicator and insert it gently and slowly inside the vaginal opening. To ensure that the applicator is adequately inserted, at least half of the applicator should be inside the vagina.
- Once the applicator has been inserted, gently push the plunger until it is fully depressed. This will eject the tablet inside your vagina.
- Gently remove the applicator and discard it properly.
Note: If the tablet falls out during insertion, discard it and use another tablet-filled applicator.
