Can Topamax help me?

Topamax helps control seizures (convulsions) in adults or children with various forms of epilepsy. Topamax, also known as an anticonvulsant, works by affecting chemicals in the brain to help reduce seizure activity. Topamax may also be prescribed to prevent migraine headaches and decrease.

Before taking Topamax tell your doctor if you have/are:

  • take any prescription or nonprescription medicine
  • pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant
  • breastfeeding
  • kidney disease or a history of kidney stones;
  • liver disease
  • glaucoma
  • asthma, emphysema, or bronchitis; or
  • if you have recently had surgery

Topamax may trigger serious nearsightedness and also increased pressure inside the eye during the first month of treatment. If you experience blurred vision or eye pain, call your doctor immediately. Stopping the drug may be needed to avoid permanent vision loss. Do not suddenly stop taking Topamax. If the drug isn’t withdrawn regularly, the frequency of your seizures could increase.

How do I take Topamax?

Follow the directions on the label of your medication and take Topamax as prescribed by your doctor. To be able to achieve the best results, your doctor may change the dosage occasionally. Take Topamax with a full glass of water; make sure the capsule is swallowed whole; if tablet is chewed or broken the capsule produces a bitter taste. You may also take it with or without food. If it is difficult to swallow the capsule when taking medicine with food, try opening the capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce, custard, ice cream, oatmeal, pudding, or yogurt. This mixture can not be saved and taken at a later time. Drink additional amounts of fluids while on Topamax to decrease the risk of kidney stones or an electrolyte imbalance. Store Topamax at room temperature and away from moisture or heat. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular dosing schedule.
