Indications
This product is indicated for the treatment of specific types of vaginal infections, including mixed fungal and bacterial infections. It comprises two medications: nystatin and metronidazole. Nystatin acts as an antifungal agent, inhibiting fungal growth, while metronidazole functions as an antibiotic, halting the growth of certain bacteria, particularly Trichomonas-type bacteria. This combination product works to alleviate itching and reduce irritating discharge associated with these infections.
Uses and Dosage
This product is intended for vaginal use exclusively. Utilizing the applicator provided, insert one ovule deeply into the vagina, typically once daily before bedtime for a duration of 10 days, or as instructed by your doctor.
Before and after using this medication, ensure you wash your hands. Adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines for placing an ovule into the applicator. Insert the applicator deeply into the vagina and depress the plunger to dispense the medication. After each use, clean the applicator thoroughly with warm, soapy water and rinse it well.
Avoid consuming alcohol while using this medication and for at least 24 hours after completing the treatment. Drinking alcohol concurrently with this medication may lead to stomach cramps, flushing, nausea, vomiting, and headaches.
Continue using this product until you have completed the full prescribed course, even if your symptoms subside within a few days. Premature cessation of treatment may result in the recurrence of the infection.
Should your symptoms worsen or fail to improve within the specified 10-day period, promptly inform your doctor. You may require additional medication to effectively treat your condition.
It may be necessary for your sexual partner to receive medication to prevent reinfection. Consult your doctor for further guidance in this regard.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- buzzing, ringing, or whistling in the ears
- constipation
- darker urine
- diarrhea
- dry mouth
- granular sensation in the vagina
- headache
- hearing loss
- heartburn
- loss of appetite
- metallic taste or other change in taste sensation
- minor itching, burning, or irritation in the vagina
- nausea
- spinning sensation
- trouble sleeping
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- confusion
- difficulty moving
- fast, pounding heartbeat or skipped heartbeats
- flu-like symptoms (e.g., fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, extreme tiredness)
- hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there)
- irrational thoughts
- yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
- dark urine
- pale stools
- chest pain
- seizures
Caution
- Before initiating treatment with nystatin/metronidazole, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies, especially if you are allergic to this medication or any of its inactive ingredients.
- Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of seizure disorders, liver disease, nervous system problems, or blood disorders.
- During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when deemed necessary. Oral antibiotics have been utilized to treat vaginal infections during pregnancy, particularly in cases where there are risks of premature childbirth or other pregnancy-related complications. Consult your doctor for comprehensive information regarding the risks and benefits associated with the use of this medication during pregnancy.
- It is unclear whether nystatin or metronidazole passes into breast milk. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your doctor for guidance.
