Nitroglycerin transdermal patches are employed to avert occurrences of angina (chest pain) in individuals afflicted with coronary artery disease, characterized by the narrowing of blood vessels supplying the heart. These patches are specifically designed for the prevention of angina attacks and should not be utilized to address an ongoing episode.
Nitroglycerin belongs to a category of medications known as vasodilators, functioning by easing the tension in blood vessels. This relaxation reduces the workload on the heart, subsequently lowering its demand for oxygen.
Uses and Dosage
Remove the transdermal patch from its pouch and follow the instructions to peel off the protective clear liner. Typically, the patch is worn on the upper arm or chest, but it can be applied anywhere on the body below the neck and above the knees or elbows. Choose a clean, dry, and hairless area, where hair may be clipped but not shaved. Avoid areas with cuts or irritation. Post-bathing or showering, ensure your skin is completely dry before patch application, although you can engage in bathing, showering, and swimming while wearing the patch. Press the patch firmly onto the selected area using the palm of your hand, remembering to wash your hands afterward.
Follow your doctor’s instructions for usage, usually wearing one patch a day for 12 to 14 hours. The prescribed dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment.
For skin irritation reduction, place each new patch on a different skin area. After removing the old patch, fold it in half with the sticky sides together and dispose of it out of reach of children and pets.
To maximize the benefits, use the medication regularly, administering it at the same time each day. Do not abruptly discontinue usage without consulting your doctor, as certain conditions may worsen with sudden cessation. Gradual dose reduction may be necessary.
While unlikely, prolonged use of this medication may result in decreased efficacy, requiring adjustments in dosing. Inform your doctor if you observe reduced effectiveness, such as worsening chest pain or increased frequency of occurrences.

Caution
- Before initiating this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have to it, similar drugs (such as isosorbide mononitrate), nitrites, or other substances. Inactive ingredients in the product can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication, especially if you have experienced a recent head injury, suffer from anemia, low blood pressure, dehydration, or other heart problems like a recent heart attack.
- This drug may induce dizziness, and the consumption of alcohol or marijuana may exacerbate this effect. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely.
- If you are scheduled for an MRI test, inform the testing personnel of your patch usage, as some patches may contain metals that could cause serious burns during the MRI. Seek guidance from your doctor on whether to remove the patch before the test, apply a new one afterward, and the proper procedure for doing so.
- Older adults may exhibit increased sensitivity to the side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness and lightheadedness, heightening the risk of falls.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only if absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is unclear whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
