Description

Indications

Permethrin 5% is used to treat scabies infections. It acts by destroying both the mites and their eggs. Permethrin 5% belongs to a group of medications called synthetic pyrethroids, which are insecticides. It works by paralyzing mites that cause scabies, killing them and their eggs, ridding the patient of their infestation.

Uses and Dosage

Permethrin is available as a cream for skin application and as a lotion for use on the scalp and hair, which is available over-the-counter. Permethrin cream is typically applied to the skin in one treatment, although a second treatment may be necessary in some cases. Permethrin lotion is usually applied to the scalp and hair in one or two treatments, occasionally requiring three treatments.

If live mites or lice are observed after the initial treatment, additional treatments may be necessary.

Use permethrin precisely as directed. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage, frequency, or duration.

Permethrin should only be applied to the skin, scalp, and hair. Avoid contact with the eyes, nose, ears, mouth, or vagina. Do not use permethrin on the eyebrows or eyelashes.

If permethrin comes into contact with your eyes, rinse them immediately with water. If your eyes remain irritated after rinsing, contact your doctor or seek medical assistance promptly.
