Eliquis is an anticoagulant medication that may be prescribed to prevent and treat the formation of harmful blood clots in the blood vessels and prevent strokes.  

This prescription drug is used for the following: 

• Prevent and treat blood clots in the legs known as deep vein thrombosis(DVT).  
• If not immediately treated, the blood clots can travel and block the arteries from the heart to the lungs resulting in pulmonary embolism (PE). It may be prescribed to 
• high-risk patients such as those who underwent a hip replacement or knee replacement surgery as prophylaxis for DVT and PE. 
• Reduce the chance of blood clots from forming again. 
• Lower the risk of strokes or blood clots for people with irregular heart rhythm, a condition known as atrial fibrillation. 

Eliquis Dosing 

This comes in Eliquis 5 mg and 2.5 mg tablets, taken orally. The amount and frequency of intake depend on factors such as age, body weight, and condition being treated. 

It is usually recommended at a dose of 5 mg twice a day. However, a lower dose of 2.5 mg twice daily is prescribed for patients with atrial fibrillation manifesting any two of the following attributes: 

• age is 80 years or older 
• bodyweight of 60 kilograms or lower 
• serum creatinine is more than 1.5 mg/dL. 

Directions 

• This prescription drug is taken by mouth, before or after a meal. It must be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor and should be used regularly to get the maximum benefit. Follow all instructions carefully.  
• It should be stored in a cool dry place and away from moisture and heat.  
• Discontinuance of taking this medication should be done with the advice of a doctor since stopping the use of this medicine prematurely increases the risk of a stroke. 

Eliquis Side Effects 

• Eliquis can easily induce bleeding, even at the slightest injury. If bleeding continues, the patient is advised to immediately seek medical attention. 
• If you notice signs of a spinal blood clot, such as tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness, especially in the legs and feet, seek emergency medical assistance. 
• Call your doctor when you experience any of the following symptoms: 
• Bruising easily, odd bleeding, a frequent nasal bleeding problem, bleeding from wounds or needle injections, or any persistent bleeding; 
• Headache, dizziness, weakness, and a sense of passing out. 

Caution 

• In case of severe allergic reactions to this medication, which cause trouble breathing; 
• light-headedness; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or neck; hives; chest pain; or dizziness, the patient should seek immediate medical attention. 
• Eliquis should not be taken if the patient has active bleeding from surgery, accident, or other reasons. 
• Consult your doctor if you are using any herbal, or nutritional supplement or have a history of liver illness or any other medical problem. 
• Extra caution should be taken in avoiding situations that may result in injury since clotting capabilities are reduced.
