Drug Description:

This medicine is used for the treatment of ringworm, jock itch, athlete’s foot and tinea versicolor (pityriasis), excessively oily skin, and other skin infectionsStore at room temperature not above 77 degrees F. Protect from excessive heat and light. Keep out of the reach of children.How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Clinical improvement may be seen fairly soon after treatment has begun; however, candidal infections and jock itch and ringworm should be treated for two weeks in order to reduce the possibility of recurrence. Patients with tinea versicolor usually require two weeks of treatment. Patients with athlete’s foot require six weeks of treatment. When treating excessively oily skin, this medicine should be applied to the affected area twice daily for four weeks or until the area is clean. Contact your doctor if there is no improvement after these time periods. Some of these products may contain sulfite preservatives which can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals (such as asthma patients). Check package label when available or consult your doctor or pharmacist. Discontinue use if irritation occurs and consult your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Precautions:

Warnings:

To prevent a rebound effect after stopping a prolonged treatment with topical corticosteroids, it is recommended to continue applying a mild topical corticosteroid at the onset of treatment with ketoconazole shampoo, and to subsequently and gradually withdraw the steroid therapy over a period of 2 to 3 weeks.

If irritation occurs, stop taking this medicine. This medicine may remove the curl from permanently waived hair. Improvement may be seen soon after treatment is started. Shampoo twice a week for 4 weeks, with at least 3 days between shampooing, and as needed to control dandruff. If no improvement is seen after 4 weeks, consult your doctor. Contra Indication:

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine or if you are using it for a child. Do not use if the skin of the scalp is is broken or inflamed.

Severe Side Effects:

Most severe: Allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); or liver damage (pale stools, yellowish skin or eyes, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue, or dark urine).

Common Side Effects:

Most common:  Oiliness and dryness of the hair and scalp; itching; abnormal hair texture; scalp pustules.

Other Side Effects:

Rash, condition worsens or does not improve in 2-4 weeks
