This medication also finds application in controlling bed-wetting.
Belonging to the category of medications termed hormones, desmopressin operates by substituting vasopressin, a hormone naturally generated within the body to help maintain the balance of water and salt.
Uses and Dosage
To administer this medication, ensure your hands are dry, then remove the tablet from its packaging and place it beneath your tongue. Allow the tablet to dissolve underneath your tongue without chewing or swallowing it whole.
For the management of diabetes insipidus, follow your doctor’s instructions and take this medication orally, typically 2 to 3 times a day.
To address nighttime urination issues, as directed by your doctor, consume this medication orally, usually once before bedtime. Regulate your fluid intake, especially refraining from drinking fluids 1 hour before taking the medication until 8 hours post-dose.
For the treatment of bedwetting, typically take this medication once a day, approximately 1 hour before bedtime. If it’s for a child, restrict fluid consumption after dinner, particularly 1 hour before sleeping until the following morning, or for at least 8 hours after the dose. If your child awakens during the night, limit their fluid intake.
While using desmopressin, control the intake of water and other fluids. Seek guidance from your doctor for specific instructions. If you realize you’re consuming more fluids than directed, promptly inform your doctor.
The dosage is determined by your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment. Do not exceed the prescribed dose of desmopressin or take it more frequently than advised.
To maximize the benefits of this medication, take it consistently at the same time(s) every day. Use aids like setting a routine to help you remember.
Should your condition fail to improve or if the medication becomes less effective, inform your doctor.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

Caution
Before taking desmopressin, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have an allergy to it or any other allergies. This product might contain inactive components that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have kidney disease, heart issues, high blood pressure, low blood sodium levels (hyponatremia), conditions that may amplify the risk of fluid/mineral imbalances, an excessive urge to drink water without thirst, a specific brain disorder (syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion), a certain adrenal gland disorder (Addison’s disease), or bleeding/clotting disorders.
If you experience dehydration, your doctor will address that condition before initiating desmopressin treatment.
Moderate alcohol consumption, as it can impede the efficacy of desmopressin.
Promptly notify your doctor if you develop any ailment that might cause imbalances in water and minerals (including fever, diarrhea, vomiting, infections like flu), or if you are in situations demanding increased fluid intake (such as exposure to very hot weather or intense exercise). Your doctor may need to halt or adjust the desmopressin regimen.
Children may exhibit heightened sensitivity to the side effects of this medication, particularly disruptions in water/mineral balance and low blood sodium levels.
Older adults could face a higher risk of water/mineral imbalances and low blood sodium levels while using this medication.
During pregnancy, only use this medication if clearly necessary, and discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
This medication can pass into breast milk. Seek your doctor’s advice before breastfeeding.
