What is Protonix used for?

Pantoprazole is the Protonix generic name. It is one of the proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) that acts by inhibiting the release of gastric acid. This medicine is indicated for stomach and esophageal problems such as heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZE). This medication is also used as maintenance therapy for patients with erosive esophagitis (EE).

How does Protonix work?

This drug works by preventing the proton pump from exchanging non-acidic potassium ions with acidic hydrogen ions. As a result, the gastric content becomes more acidic.

When Pantoprazole is taken correctly and is absorbed in the bloodstream, it inhibits the action of the proton pump, thereby reducing acid secretion in the stomach. Hence, this medication helps relieve gastrointestinal and esophageal problems.

Protonix Dosage

The dosage and frequency of Pantoprazole vary from one person to another. It depends on your health condition, age, weight, and tolerance to therapy. This drug is available in 20 mg and 40 mg delayed-release tablets.

The recommended adult dose for GERD with a history of EE is Protonix 40 mg once a day for up to eight weeks, while for children, it will depend on their weight. The recommended daily dose for children weighing 15 kg to 40 kg is 20 mg, while patients whose weight is more than 40 kg should take a 40 mg tablet once a day for at least eight weeks.

For maintenance dose for EE recovery, adults should take 40 mg once a day or as prescribed by their doctor. A similar amount of 40 mg pill is also administered twice daily for ZE.

Changing the dosing and frequency of this drug is not advisable because of the increased risk of developing unwanted side effects of the medication. Always consult your healthcare provider for any adjustments.
