Drug Description:

This medicine is used to treat an overactive thyroid gland and to treat or prepare the overactive thyroid gland for surgery. It may also be used when your doctor has advised against the removal of the thyroid.Store between 59 and 86 degrees F. Protect from light and moisture.How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take this medicine every 8 hours. This medicine may cause drowsiness; patients should observe caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. There have been rare reports of fulminant hepatitis, hepatic necrosis, encephalopathy, and death caused by this medicine.Most severe:  Drug fever.Most common:  Rash; hives; nausea; vomiting; stomach pain; joint pain; tingling; loss of taste; hair loss; muscle pain; headache; itching; drowsiness; nerve irritation; swelling; feeling of spinning motion; change in skin color; yellowing of the skin or eyes; enlargement of the salivary glands and lymph glands.Other: Inhibition of myelopoiesis, aplastic anemia, a lupus-like syndrome, hepatitis, jaundice, periarteritis, and hypoprothrombinemia, nephritis (very rarely) and hypoglycemic coma.
