Travatan eyedrops uses

Travatan is a type of prostaglandin analog medication. It is an ophthalmic solution used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients suffering from open-angle glaucoma and other ocular hypertension to prevent blindness.

Travatan eyedrops’ generic name is travoprost. This eye medication can be used as single-agent therapy or combined with other drugs, as prescribed by your doctor.

How does Travatan work?

When patients have increased intraocular pressure (IOP), there is an abnormality between the in and out of the normal fluid cycle in their eyes called aqueous humor. This imbalance creates high pressure inside the eye that can damage your optic nerve; as a result, glaucoma occurs.

When administered correctly, it mimics the function of prostaglandins, which boosts the drainage of the aqueous humor. This drug reduces the amount of fluid produced in the eyes. As a result, it re-balances the fluid cycle, thereby maintaining the IOP at a healthy level.

Directions on how to use Travatan eyedrops

To begin, thoroughly read all medication instructions and information. Use the medication precisely as instructed. If there is anything that you do not understand or are unsure about how to use this eye drop, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

  1. Before administering this medication, wash your hands. Remove the cap and make sure that the dropper is clean before putting it in your eyes.
  2. When instilling these eye drops, begin by tilting your head backward. Pull the lower lid down gently to create a pocket, then look up. Make sure the dropper does not come into contact with your eyes. Squeeze one drop into the pocket slowly and close your eyes for at least two minutes.
  3. You can press the inside corner of your eye while your eyes are closed to avoid the drops from entering your throat. Do not blink or wipe your eyes. After applying the medication, make sure to wash your hands.
  4. If you need to use more than one drop, repeat these steps and wait five minutes before administering the next drop. However, if you are still using other ophthalmic medicine, wait for at least 10 minutes before applying it. Avoid taking this drug into the mouth.
