Indications
Psyllium is indicated for the treatment of constipation. It works by increasing the bulk of the stool, which facilitates intestinal movement, as well as by increasing the water content of the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. This medication has additionally been utilized in conjunction with a balanced diet for the treatment of high cholesterol levels.
Uses and Dosage
Psyllium is available in various forms, including powder, granules, capsules, liquid, and wafers, and is to be taken orally. The recommended frequency of consumption is one to three times daily.
The powder and granules should be mixed with 8 ounces (240 milliliters) of a desirable liquid, such as fruit juice, immediately prior to consumption.
Wafers should be thoroughly chewed. For effective results and to avoid potential side effects, consume at least 8 ounces (240 milliliters) of liquid when taking psyllium.
Psyllium should not be consumed for a duration exceeding one week unless directed by your physician.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication.
- It’s unclear whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

FAQ
Is it okay to take Metamucil every day?
You can take Metamucil every day for up to 7 days. Don’t take it longer than 7 days without speaking to your provider first, since Metamucil might not be right for you if you need it long term.
Does Metamucil work for opioid-induced constipation?
If you’re constipated from taking opioid pain medications, Metamucil isn’t the best option, since it mainly helps your stool retain water to make it easier to pass. Opioids typically slow down your gut movement, so medications for any related constipation need to help get your gut moving again.
