Description

Indications

Lipase, protease and amylase is employed to enhance the digestion of food in both children and adults who lack sufficient pancreatic enzymes due to conditions affecting the pancreas, such as cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or blockages in the passages between the pancreas and the intestine. This medication falls within the class of medications known as enzymes; they function as a substitute for the enzymes typically produced by the pancreas. Their mechanism involves reducing fatty bowel movements and enhancing nutrition by breaking down fats, proteins, and starches from ingested food into smaller substances that can be absorbed from the intestine.

Uses and Dosage

Lipase, protease and amylase is available as a tablet and a delayed-release capsule for oral consumption. It should be taken with plenty of water with every meal or snack, typically 5 to 6 times per day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label meticulously, and seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist regarding any unclear aspects. Take pancrelipase precisely as directed, avoiding deviations such as taking more or less of it, or increasing the frequency beyond your doctor’s prescription.

This medication is marketed under various brand names, and there are differences among these products. Consult your doctor before switching to a different brand.

Swallow the tablets and delayed-release capsules whole with plenty of water; do not split, chew, or crush them. Do not retain the tablets or capsules in your mouth after swallowing.

If you have difficulty swallowing the delayed-release capsules whole, you can open them and mix the contents with a small amount of soft, acidic food such as applesauce. You may also be able to mix the capsule contents with certain other foods; consult your doctor or pharmacist for further information. Consume the mixture immediately after mixing, without chewing or crushing the capsule contents. After ingesting the mixture, drink a full glass of water or juice promptly to facilitate the ingestion of the medication.

If administering the delayed-release capsules to a baby, you may open the capsule, sprinkle the contents onto a small amount of soft, acidic baby food such as jarred baby applesauce, bananas, or pears, and feed it to the baby immediately.

Avoid mixing the capsule contents with formula or breast milk. Alternatively, you can sprinkle the contents directly into the baby’s mouth. After administering the medication, ensure the baby consumes plenty of liquid to wash down the medication. Check the baby’s mouth to confirm that all of the medication has been swallowed.

The contents of the delayed-release capsule should be consumed immediately after opening. Do not open capsules or prepare mixtures of capsules and food until you are ready to use them. Discard any unused capsule contents or mixtures; do not store them for future use.

Your doctor will likely initiate treatment with a low dose of medication and gradually increase it based on your response to treatment and the fat content of your diet. Inform your doctor about any changes in your symptoms or overall well-being during treatment. Do not adjust the dosage of your medication unless instructed by your doctor.

Your doctor will specify the maximum amount of medication you should consume in a day. Do not exceed this prescribed dosage, even if you consume more meals and snacks than usual. Discuss any additional dietary intake with your doctor.

Lipase, protease and amylase will only enhance digestion as long as you continue taking it. Even if you feel well, continue taking lipase, protease and amylase and do not discontinue it without consulting your doctor.
