Indications
Trospium is prescribed for the treatment of overactive bladder, a condition characterized by involuntary contractions of the bladder muscles, leading to frequent urination, an urgent need to urinate, and difficulty controlling urination.
Classified as an antimuscarinic medication, trospium operates by inducing relaxation in the bladder muscles, thereby mitigating the occurrences of urgent, frequent, or uncontrolled urination.
Uses and Dosage
Administer this medication orally on an empty stomach, typically at least 1 hour before a meal, as instructed by your doctor, usually once daily. The prescribed dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to the treatment.
Consume the capsule whole; avoid crushing or chewing it. Additionally, refrain from consuming alcohol or any product containing alcohol for 2 hours before and after taking this medication. Alcohol ingestion can compromise the drug’s extended action and may heighten potential side effects.
If swallowing the capsule poses difficulties, you have the option to open it and place the beads in a small amount of water or directly onto the tongue. Do not crush or chew the beads, as this could lead to a rapid release of the drug, potentially increasing side effects. Swallow all the beads promptly.
Consistency is key for optimal results; take this medication regularly at the same time each day to derive the maximum benefit.
Inform your doctor if there is no improvement in your condition or if it worsens.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- constipation
- headache
- confusion
- gas
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- difficulty urinating
- swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
- rash
- hives
- itching
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- hallucinations
Caution
- Prior to taking trospium, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, as this medication may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Before commencing this medication, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of glaucoma, kidney disease, liver disease, stomach/intestinal issues, myasthenia gravis, or difficulty urinating (urinary retention).
- This medication may induce dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects.
- Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness or clear vision until you can do so safely.
- Be aware that this medication may reduce sweating, increasing the risk of heat stroke. Avoid activities that may lead to overheating, such as strenuous work or exercise in hot weather, or using hot tubs. Stay well-hydrated and dress lightly in warm weather. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience persistent fever, mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness.
- Older adults may be more susceptible to side effects, particularly constipation, dry mouth, drowsiness, confusion, or difficulties urinating. Drowsiness and confusion heighten the risk of falling.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only if clearly necessary. Discuss potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- The passage of this drug into breast milk is unknown. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

What’s the difference between the immediate-release and the extended-release version of Sanctura?
The extended-release version lasts longer in your body than the immediate-release version (by about 15 hours), so you only need to take it once a day. Since the immediate-release version doesn’t last as long, you have to take it twice a day.
Should I take the extended-release version of Sanctura in the morning?
Your body absorbs and breaks down some medications differently during the daytime rather than during the nighttime while you’re sleeping. Sanctura works best if you take it in the morning, because there’s more of this medication in your body while you’re awake.
