Yaz oral contraceptive

Yaz is a combination oral contraceptive commonly prescribed to prevent pregnancy. It works by administering hormones (estrogen and progestin) that suppress ovulation (the maturing and release of an egg) and other related changes your body goes through in preparation for pregnancy.

Yaz is also used to treat the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), such as anxiety, depression, irritability, trouble concentrating, lack of energy, sleep or appetite changes, breast tenderness, joint or muscle pain, headache, and weight gain. It may also be prescribed to treat moderate acne in women who are at least 14 years old and have started having menstrual periods.

The pill pack consists of 24 days of active pills followed by 4 days of inactive or “reminder” pills to round out the cycle. The 24-day active hormone pill regimen combined with the 30-hour half-life of drospirenone results in less hormonal ups and downs between cycles than when using the more traditional birth control pill.

Before being prescribed Yaz your doctor will need to know if you:

  • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Have a heart valve disorder
  • Have a history of stroke, blood clot
  • Have kidney or liver disease
  • Have an adrenal gland disorder
  • Have unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Have any type of breast, uterine, or hormone-dependent cancer
  • Have a history of jaundice caused by birth control pills
  • Have a history of migraines
