Welchol (colesevelam)

Filed under: Uncategorized — robertprice @ 9:00 am

Welchol is used for the treatment of high cholesterol levels in the blood. It is suggested that this medication be used along with exercise and a low-cholesterol, low-fat diet. Reducing your cholesterol can help prevent strokes and heart attacks.

When the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, a blood fat, in your bloodstream become too high, your likelihood of developing cholesterol-containing fatty deposits (plaques) in your blood vessels increases. Over time, plaques cause your arteries to narrow, which impedes blood flow and creates a condition called atherosclerosis. Narrowing of the arteries that supply your heart with blood (coronary artery disease) can prevent your heart from getting as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs. This means an increased risk of a heart attack. Likewise, decreased blood flow to your brain can cause a stroke. Less blood flowing to your lower limbs may result in exercise-related pain or even gangrene.

Before using Welchol tell your doctor if you

  • have bleeding problems
  • have constipation
  • have difficulty swallowing
  • have gall bladder disease
  • have hemorrhoids
  • have had a recent surgery
  • have stomach problems
  • have an unusual or allergic reaction to Welchol, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • have blocked intestines
  • are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding

Welchol Side Effects

Severe: Allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); chest pain; nausea; rash.

Common: Constipation; indigestion; muscle aches; sore throat; weakness.

This information is advisory only. It does not contain all information about this medication. If you have any questions about Welchol, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or health care provider.
