Postpartum Depression – A Gendered Condition No More

Depression shows no prejudice – it affects all social classes and races. Knowing this, it is surprising that the media and medical professionals stereotype this mental illness as a female. A recent study confirms that as many as one-in-ten new fathers demonstrate signs of postpartum depression. Originally doctors stipulated that the postpartum depression condition was linked to hormonal changes during pregnancy; however, this new study indicates that men also experience postpartum depression, likely linked to negative environment changes, such as lack of sleep, changes in personal routine, and subsequent relationship issues. The lead researcher of the study stresses the need to treat depressed parents as soon as possible. If depressed parents are left untreated, there is the long-term risk of behavioral and psychiatric problems in said child. The child’s issues can later become a societal problem, as they may “act” out in the future.
While new father depression is just as much an issue as new mother depression, many men are less willing to seek help. Postpartum depression has always been characterized as a female issue, so men are less willing to admit that they are experiencing issues. The stigma against male postpartum depression must be eliminated! For more information about male postpartum depression, visit the following website: www.postpartummen.com

With this new awareness about postpartum depression in men, below find this detailed list on postpartum depression symptoms and treatments.

Postpartum Depression Symptoms:

  • Males tend to become more aggressive; women tend to be sad
  • Lack of interest in your baby or negative feelings towards your baby
  • Worrying about hurting your baby
  • Lack of concern for yourself
  • Loss of pleasure
  • Lack of energy and motivation
  • Feeling of worthlessness and guilt
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Sleeping more or less than usual
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

Postpartum Depression Treatment:

So you are experiencing postpartum depression – now what? Whether male or female, there are some universally accepted self-treatment and medical treatment for postpartum depression.

Self Treatment:

  • Make sleep a priority. While attaining eight hours of sleep may seem impossible, you need to make sleep a priority. Enlist the help of family members while you take a nap.
  • Make your relationships priorities. When depressed, it is of the utmost importance to stay connected with friends and family, and lean on them for supporting. This means forming a united front with your significant other.
  • Make meals a priority. When you are depressed, nutrition often falls to the wayside. Good nutrition means will ensure you have more energy and better concentration to deal with your baby.
  • Ease back into exercise . Studies have shown that exercise is just as effective as antidepressants for treating depression, so it is important to get back on an exercise plan ASAP.

Medical Treatment

If you have sunk into a deep depression, it is important to recognize this fact and seek medical attention as soon as possible. Many counselors specialize in postpartum depression treatment. Counseling , and antidepressants if necessary, have been proven to provide effective results towards combating postpartum depression.

Prenatal Exposure to Pesticides = Higher Risk of ADHD

In a recent study it was found that pregnant women who are greatly exposed to pesticides will have children with a higher risk of developing ADHD. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a condition involving the nervous system and has symptoms such as inattention, restlessness, and impulsiveness.

Other symptoms of ADHD include: the inability to pay attention, hyperactivity, impulsiveness, forgetfulness, and mood swings. ADHD needs to be diagnosed by a doctor as it is often difficult to tell whether a child is just immature of his/her age, super active,  as well as many other situations.

According to the study that observed approximately 300 pregnant women, traces of ADHD were observed at the age of five for children whose mothers had been exposed to pesticides.

When pregnant women are exposed to pesticides it has an impact on the growing child’s nervous system. Pesticides damage the nervous system by disrupting neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters act as messengers in the brain as they pass information from one place to another within the nervous system.

The conclusion found was that women living close to agricultural areas were more susceptible to give birth to children with a high risk of ADHD. However, it also affects the common person. Everyone eats fruits and vegetables. Fruits and veggies are sprayed with pesticides when they are growing so that they do not get attacked by insects and other pests.

It is recommended that people take time to wash their fruits and vegetables properly before eating them. This has now become especially important for expecting mothers. Another alternative would be to eat organic foods instead.

Lastly, it is important to inform you that many other factors could have contributed to the results found in this study besides exposure to pesticides. This issue is still being studied.

Woman Giving Birth to Two Babies Only One Week Apart

Angie Cromar, a 34 year old woman living in Murray, Utah is pregnant with two children conceived one week apart. She gave the news to her husband who was utterly shocked and in disbelief as most people would be. The first question that pops to mind is, “How is this possible?”

Cromar has a rare condition called Uterus Didelphys which essentially means that she has two uteruses. This condition has been reported to occur in approximately 0.1%- 0.05% of women in the United States. However, rarer than the condition itself, is the situation Cromar is in- being pregnant in both uteruses at once. There is a one in five millionth chance of this happening and only about 100 cases like this have occurred in the world.

Cromar, mother of two, already knew about the rare condition she had before this particular pregnancy occurred.  Her condition had not played a role in her previous pregnancies as they had gone by normally.

Being a nurse, Angie Cromar, also understands the added risks that this rare condition will have on her pregnancy. Women with Uterus Didelphys are more likely to have a miscarriage or deliver prematurely.  So far, the children are healthy and no problems have occurred. It will be exciting to see how this turns out!

13 Year Old Girl Self Aborts In Home

The ever controversial abortion debate has once again been brought forth. A 13 year old girl from Pennsylvania used a pencil to perform a self-abortion. She became very sick during the procedure and delivered the child in her home.

To make matters much, much worse, she was apparently participating in a sexual relationship for one year with a man named Michael James Lisk, who happens to be 30. So far, it is believed that Lisk came to the young girl’s house after the abortion and buried the child in the woods. Police would later discover the body after the girl gave information about Lisk while being treated at the hospital.

What happened to this girl was horrible and I believe that Lisk should be made an example of. Preying on a child like that is completely unforgivable and wrong. He is obviously a very disturbed man and belongs behind bars.

However, while almost everyone can agree with putting Lisk in jail, the sides are divided on abortion laws. Should abortion be legal and how easy should it be for person to get an abortion. Pro-choice activists are arguing that if the girl was able to receive an abortion (Pennsylvania requires parental consent for abortions) then she could have avoided the near-death experience. However, I doubt either side will change their position on the continuing debate.

Recent Study Shows Link Between Two Types of Antibiotic and Birth Defects

For many women, having children is the most important thing they will ever do. We are programmed genetically to reproduce in order to allow our species to survive. We are animals, and like many animals, we protect our young. This need to protect our children is also why it is scary that two common antibiotics have recently been linked to causing birth defects.

A recent study showed that two common antibiotics may cause birth defects. The two drugs in the study were nitrofurantoins (sold under the brand names Macrobid and Furadantin) and sulfa drugs (sold under the names Bactrim and Thiosulfil Forte). However, this was only the first study to show these results and further testing will be needed in order to confirm any real findings.

This does not mean that ALL antibiotics will cause birth defects. The only thing these findings mean is that you have to talk with your doctor about taking certain medications. You need to understand what some of these different medicines do. You must weigh the potential risks of the drug against the benefits. Take some time to really find out all the courses of action.

Mother To Child Transmission Of Cancer Possible, But Extremely Rare

During pregnancy a lot of different, harmful substances can pass to the child. Smoking, alcohol, and drugs are among the variety of different substances that can cause devastating effects to the unborn child. The baby be born with a wide array of disorders, from congenital disorders, to drug addiction, to fetal alcohol syndrome. The result can be very damaging and may even cause the death of the child. However, among the numerous different things that can effect an unborn child, cancer originating from the mother has been talked about, argued about, but only now are there definitive answers.

Researches have discovered the cancer can be transmitted to the child, from the mother during pregnancy. A 28-year-old Japanese woman gave birth to a baby girl. Everything appeared fine until a month after the birth. The mother developed vaginal bleeding and would be diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Although she began chemotherapy she would die only 19 days later after developing encephalitis. To make matters worse the baby would be taken to hospital at only 11 months of age, after she developed a large swell in her right cheek. The child had a tumor in her jaw and cancer that spread to her lungs. After DNA tests from the mother and child researchers found the cancer in the child and mother shared the same mutated gene. Also, the cancer found in the baby had spread before birth.

However, before mothers start becoming alarmed, the chances of cancer being given to a developing fetus if extremely low. The cancer in the case of the Japanese mother and child was caused because of a mutation that allowed the cancer to spread to the baby undetected. So just remember that the chance is very remote at best.

Regardless it still does seem a little bit scary that something as devastating as cancer is able to spread like that. I’m looking for the day when cancer isn’t an issue, when “the cure” will be available, and many lives are saved all around the world.

Alcohols Effect on Unborn Babies

Most people know that drinking alcohol while pregnant is extremely harmful to the baby. However, do you know exactly what alcohol can do to your child? Well truth is, many people don’t and even though most women try to avoid alcohol when they become pregnant, some will consume alcohol before they are aware they have become pregnant.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is the leading cause of preventable birth defects and developmental difficulties in children. Some growth deficits include: mental retardation, heart, lung, and kidney defects, specific facial characteristics, hyperactivity and behavior problems, attention and memory problems, and learning disabilities.

The most horrific part about all the defects is, if they are caused by alcohol, they can be totally avoided. Many people need to really be aware of what they could possibly be doing. Now I’m not saying don’t ever drink alcohol, but if you are trying to become pregnant, might have accidentally become pregnant, or are in the prime child bearing years pay attention.

For anyone that doesn’t believe that alcohol causes horrible birth defects, go read a book. Seriously, you might learn something. Alcohol isn’t a horrible thing, but if used without any sort of thought horrible things may happen.

Obese Women are the Most Likely to Become Pregnant

According to Reuters Health Information, a study posted in Diabetes Care has shown that contraceptive use among obese women in North America is only 33% for obese women (BMI 30+). Contraceptive use by this high-risk group is less than the contraceptive use by women without or obesity.

One possible reason for a low contraceptive use amongst obese women is the risks that are associated with birth control use for these groups. Contraceptive shots have been proven to be less effective on obese women due to thicker layers of fat tissue, and a recent study has found that Obese and overweight women have a 70% higher chance of becoming pregnant than women of normal BMI while using oral contraceptives.

A study says that 5 out of 100 overweight women became pregnant in one year while using oral contraceptives containing estrogen and progestin, and only 3 out of 100 women of normal weight became pregnant in one year. The supposed reason for these statistics is that the hormones in birth control pills are soluble in fat; therefore, the majority of the hormones taken by obese women will dissolve before entering the blood stream. In addition, blood clotting in obese women is more common than in women of normal weight, and taking birth control pills could increase risk.

Due to a decrease in efficiency of birth control pills and shots in obese women, many obese women do not use these common forms of contraceptive, and are therefore more likely to become pregnant.
