Foods That Can Decrease Inflammation and Boost Your Immune System

Inflammation

Inflammation can become a very bothersome and painful thing to deal with. Some people will just wait for the inflammation to decrease naturally, while others have serious medical problems that cause frequent inflammation that is often very painful. Either way, most people do not enjoy this inflammation, but are unaware that there are natural and fairly simple ways to help decrease symptoms. However, I would just like to say that in some serious cases, only medication will be helpful. Consult with your doctor about the severity of your condition.

In order to fight inflammation you should try eating foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. These acids help your body produce hormones to lessen your inflammation. Some of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids are in coldwater fish, such as wild salmon, sardines, trout and mackerel. There are also some plants that are reasonably good sources of omega-3. If you’re not the fish-eating type (my dad and sister) try having some walnuts, flaxseed or canola oil.

Immune System

Obviously being sick isn’t something many of us strive for. That’s why a healthy immune system is so important. Our immune system help protect us against illness by destroying things like harmful bacteria and viruses. However, we have to take care of our immune system if we want it to take care of us.

There are many foods that can help us boost our immune system. Garlic is one of the best. For a very long time (think ancient Egypt) garlic has been revered for its healthy benefits. Green tea is also a great, simple thing to add to a meal, like dinner, to help protect against all those things looking to make you sick. Green tea has also been linked to cancer-prevention. Additionally, broccoli is an extremely good immune booster. Containing vitamins A, C, E, anti-cancer agents, and strong antioxidants, there aren’t many things that are more effective at boosting your immune system than broccoli.

Oranges

One orange provides 100% of the body’s daily vitamin C requirement. Vitamin C is known for it’s ability to prevent colds and boost the immune system!

  • Prevents Cancer – Green tea has often been suspected to aid in the fight against cancer. In 1994 a study was published that showed that green tea actually reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in both Chinese men and women by nearly 60%! The University of Purdue recently finished a study that shows that a specific compound in green tea helps prevent the growth of cancer cells.
  • Good For Cholesterol – Green tea has been proven to be beneficial for those that have high cholesterol. Research indicates that green tea lowers the total level of cholesterol. Additionally, green tea promotes a better ratio between the good cholesterol (HDL) and the bad cholesterol (LDL).
  • Green tea may soon be able to cure many other diseases. Green tea has a specific compound in it that clings to cells and protects them from harmful viruses and some diseases. Some research suggests that green tea helps protect against HIV infections. Studies suggest that with more research green tea, or some form of medication that is derived from green tea may be able to cure HIV.
