Dexilant vs. Nexium

Nexium-vs-DexilantAcid reflux, also called GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflex Disease), can be a painful condition that allows acid to build up in your stomach causing a burning sensation in your chest or abdomen. The acid can also travel from the stomach into the esophagus causing a very painful burning sensation. The good news is there are drugs on the market that can successfully help you deal with this issue and diminish the pain associated with it.

Dexilant and Nexium are both common drugs used to treat this condition, but it may be difficult to determine which one is right for you. Below is some vital information about both drugs to help you compare them and find the right one for you.

How Dexilant and Nexium Work

Both Dexilant and Nexium are proton pump inhibitors. They both work much that same way, which is to reduce the amount of acid that is being produced in the stomach. With less acid production, it is less likely for the acid to travel up into the esophageal area, causing the burning sensation. The goal of treatment is to reduce the number of times acid reflux symptoms occur and to diminish the pain associated with the disease.

Dosage

These medications must be taken on a daily basis for a set period of time. Patients who use Nexium will take a dosage of between 20mg and 40mg per day. Each patient is likely to begin their regiment at 20mg or 30mg, but that can be increased as much as 50 percent or up to 40 mg if necessary. The patient will continue take this medication for at least four to eight weeks. On the other hand, patients who use Dexilant will be given a dosage of 30mg per day. These patients will continue to take this drug for a four-week period, at which point they will be reevaluated.

Side Effects

These two drugs also have a series of different side effects. Nexium’s side effects include dizziness, muscle cramps, muscle spasms, anxiety, confusion, diarrhea, headaches, seizures, coughing, and increased heart rate.
Dexilant’s side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, gas, stomach pain, cold symptoms, and upper respiratory tract infections.

Conclusion

Dexilant is the latest acid reflex drug to be approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), but initial studies have proven it to be as effective as Nexium. Dexilant is also less expensive, which may make is a better option for some.
Talk to your doctor about your option and work with your doctor to find the best treatment for you.

How Does Lipitor Work?

The drug Lipitor is actually based on calcium. It’s meant to help reduce high LDL cholesterol (‘bad’ cholesterol) to safer, healthier levels. Usually, it’s taken in doses of 10 to 20 milligrams per day.

Why Lipitor was Made

Yes, the body produces cholesterol naturally. That’s true. But, large amounts of LDL cholesterol can be harmful. It can contribute to causing heart attacks and other extremely serious health problems. The human body makes and uses cholesterol to build and maintain cell membranes and other body structures.

Surplus cholesterol is harmful, however. Those who have cholesterol problems have more than their body needs for maintenance – often more than several people would need to keep their cells, membranes, and nerves in good working order.

How does Lipitor work to help? It helps to restore a more natural balance by altering how fast cholesterol is made in the body.

The Science Behind the Question: How Does Lipitor Work

The human body works to maintain a correct “budget” of cholesterol in two ways. It produces cholesterol itself and absorbs it from food by the liver filtering it out of the bloodstream.

The liver clears LDL cholesterol from the blood with “receptors”, which capture the cholesterol and remove it from circulation in the body. A special enzyme controls how active these receptors are. The more enzyme there is, the less active the receptors, and the more cholesterol stays in the blood.

Simply put, Lipitor controls the enzyme that has a direct effect on how much cholesterol your liver filters out.

Lipitor does not directly affect cholesterol. It doesn’t clean it out of your system itself. Rather, it adjusts your body’s setting so that you end up with less cholesterol overall. It makes your liver’s receptors become more active, which produces the desired results: the body itself filters more cholesterol out of the bloodstream. This filtering can cut cholesterol levels drastically: 30% to 60%.

A Lipitor Overdose: What Would Happen?

Lipitor is one of the most powerful anti-cholesterol drugs we’ve ever made. It needs to be taken carefully.

In too high a dosage, it gives the liver receptors unchecked free reign. Too much cholesterol is removed. This can cause the body’s membranes to disintegrate, and kidney failure results.

But taken in reasonable doses, it can be a literal lifesaver. And here’s why.

High, uncontrolled cholesterol builds up fatty deposits inside the arteries, which can partially clog them. This can lead to strokes and heart attacks, definitely dangerous and possibly lethal.

Lipitor averts this danger and gives people whose high cholesterol would otherwise kill them prematurely a longer, better life.

So how does Lipitor work? Essentially, it boosts your own body’s cholesterol filters, taking high cholesterol out of the equation.

The Placebo Effect

Ever heard of the saying mind over matter? Well turns out there’s something to it. Studies have shown that placebos, basically a pill without medication to measure the effectiveness of real medicines in trials and clinical studies, can actually help reduce real pain.

Many scientists theorize that when the patient believes they are taking the real medication then they will experience the medications effects. It’s more of a mind game then anything really. And tricking the brain has been done for ages.

Essentially, what the body does is convince itself the medication is working. Many people can create similar effects by just deeply concentrating. If you’ve ever seen a man walk across burning coals, or stand under a freezing waterfall for longer than humanely possible then you’ve witnessed the effects of the brain. Given when someone can turn this “power” on and off they have some serious skill. Either way the power of the brain is truly remarkable.

It really is quite interesting to see what the brain can do when it is tricked into believing something. How the brain can somehow, miraculously lessen pain even when no medication is being taken. Placebos are used in medical studies to rule out the power of the brain and to determine the real, or as close to real, effectiveness of the drug.

Protest Against United States H.I.V Border Ban

Activists gathered at Peace Arch park on Sunday to protest the American policy of banning entry to persons who are HIV positive. The rally was led by a Canadian man from Surrey, British Columbia, named Martin Rooney.

The ban was implemented in the 1980’s and is still, in 2009, in place. Now maybe in the 80’s when that bad blood epidemic was occurring the ban might have made some sort of sense. I’m not saying it made a lot of sense, but with the amount of panic it is understandable, but now, in this day and age, it is unacceptable.

Why should anyone be discriminated against? Why should being a Canadian with HIV be different than an American with HIV? Medicines today have made living with HIV much more manageable. Also, HIV is less contagious than many things, Swine Flu for example. If you’re so worried about getting HIV then make sure you test the person you’re with before doing any sexual activities.

People with HIV should be allowed to live like everyone else, not some sort of second class citizen. Why can’t someone go down across the border to shop for the day, maybe spend some time at a recreational property, relax. Just because they’re in America doesn’t mean they’re going to go around trying to get everyone infected. It isn’t like HIV positive people are hurting the American economy, they’re actually helping it.

This shouldn’t even have to be “taken into consideration,” this is ethically wrong. I would expect something like this in Nazi Germany in the 30-40’s, not present day America, so called “Land of the free.” Stop discriminating or stop calling yourself the land of the free, you can’t have both.

60% of Bankruptcies Are Caused By Medical Bills

Filed under: bankrupt,bankruptcy,medical debt,medicine,obama,Uncategorized — robertprice @ 5:43 pm

Getting help is not as easy as it used to be. A recent study showed that roughly 60% of all bankruptcies in America are due to medical bills. This is an increase of 50% in just six years. And what’s worse is that for the middle class, medical insurance offers little protection, if any at all.

The study found that 75% of the bankrupt families actually had medical insurance. However, the medical debts were too costly. The research team, consisting of Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, and Ohio University, reported that, “Using a conservative definition, 62.1 percent of all bankruptcies in 2007 were medical; 92 percent of these medical debtors had medical debts over $5,000, or 10 percent of pretax family income. Most medical debtors were well-educated, owned homes and had middle-class occupations.”

The study surveyed 2,134 random families that filed for bankruptcy between January and April, 2007, BEFORE the recession began. Only 29% of the families blamed their bankruptcy on the medical bills, 62% had medical bills that were equivalent or greater than 10% of the family income.

Obviously something needs to be done here. Many middle class Americans are being thrown into bankruptcy when they are most in need of help. The United States Government, headed by President Obama, is beginning its reform of the current healthcare system. While it will obviously take some tweaking before the new system will be perfected it is needed. Currently, the U.S healthcare system leaves 15% of the American population (about 46 million people if you didn’t know), without healthcare insurance. 46 million people without any coverage whatsoever.

What is more appalling is that the costs of the medical bills for nonstroke neurological illnesses, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) are as high as $34,167. MS is followed by diabetes ($26,971), injuries ($25,096), stroke ($23,380), mental illnesses ($23,178), and heart disease ($21,955).

It is clear that something needs to be done, and President Obama also recognizes that some sort of change will be needed. The immense job of reforming the current healthcare system is in his hands, and hopefully he is up to the task. He promised change, but let’s see if he can change things for the better.
