Drop Fat, Get Muscle

By now, countless people’s New Year’s resolutions have fallen through; one in particular is to lose weight. Not only is it complex to lose weight, but to gain muscle at the same time seems impossible. Fortunately there are certain tips in dieting and exercise which may be helpful in completing this.

1. Weight loss occurs when your body has fewer calories. This can occur with dieting and/or exercise. Weight training not only burns calories, but also puts your muscles to work, building and strengthening them. Once you have increased your muscle, you will also burn more calories. Muscle burns calories, thus helping in weight loss. Calorie maintenance level is the number of calories your body naturally burns each day; muscle increases this number substantially. Weight training includes squats, dead lifts, bench presses, bicep curls, hammer curls, tricep extensions, exc. Other exercises which would be helpful are squats lunges, crunches, push-ups and back extensions.

2. Eat the right foods if you want to lose weight. You cannot expect your body to discard fat when you are still maintaining a high calorie intake, even if you do weight exercises. Foods you should eat when trying to gain muscle include the following:

a. Protein: Lots and lots of protein! Eat meat, poultry, fish, eggs, peanut butter, etc.

b. Fat: As bad as this sounds, fat is essential for muscle gain. Just exercise lots and the bad fat will be gone. Fish oil and omega 3, 6, and 9 are great for muscle gain.

c. Vegetables and fruits: Colorful vegetables are the best. The more colorful the plate, the healthier it is. Fruits have healthy sugar in them. This is a better form of sugar than what you could get from most other foods.

d. Water: Drink and drink and drink water. It is essential for everything.

e. Whole grains: Trade your white bread or rice for whole grain if you want to lose weight and gain muscle.

Other tips are:

– Avoid foods that come out of a box.

– Avoid trans-fats, but saturated fats are fine.

– Don’t drink pop.

– Limit not-natural sugar consumption.

4 Healthy Alternatives to Popcorn


If you’re like me than you have to have some popcorn whenever you decide to go out and rent a movie. However, if you haven’t already noticed, popcorn isn’t the best food for your body to be digesting all the time. Once in a while it’s okay, but when you have it 2-3 times a week, you might want to consider switching to something else. The good news for you (and me) is that there are healthy alternatives to popcorn.

Cauliflower – Cauliflower is a great alternative to popcorn as it is significantly healthier than popcorn. Additionally, it has a similar feel to popcorn if you break the cauliflower into pieces. You can decide to eat cauliflower raw (the way I like it) or you can cook it and even use some dips or seasonings.

Trail Mix – Go out and look for you own ingredients to make your personal brand of trail mix. Make sure your trail mix is unsalted though. By purchasing your own foods for trail mix, you’ll save money in the long run, and you’ll be able to decide everything that goes into you trail mix. Ideas – unsalted peanuts, unsweetened chocolate chips, dried fruit, etc.

Cherry tomatoes or grapes – cherry tomatoes or grapes are a very good alternative to your usual buttery delight. These alternatives are healthy, significantly healthier than popcorn, and will probably make you forget that you’re not eating popcorn. By the time the movie starts, you probably won’t notice or care that you’re not having popcorn.

Apple slices with almond butter – This is one of my favorite things to eat, not just as an alternative to popcorn, but just in general. Apple slices with almond butter are a very healthy choice that will satisfy your need to eat something that’s crunchy, but also salty and sweet.
Hopefully one or more of these things can help you achieve a healthier life. If none of these work you could always try just doing something else with your hands, such as knitting, maybe even fidgeting with a pen or pencil.
