Researchers have found that a combination of four generic drugs along with house hold aspirin can half the risk of heart disease in middle-aged people.

The multi pill combination or ‘polypill‘ appears to be a cheap and affective way to address heart disease according to the American College of Cardiology.Essentially, the pill combines cholesterol lowering medicine (referred to as a statin) house hold aspirin, and three other blood pressure drugs.

This may be considered a monumental breakthrough considering heart disease is the primary cause of death globally. According to the World Health Organization, heart disease accounts for one in three deaths each year world wide.

“Before this study, there were no data about whether it was even possible to put five active ingredients into a single pill,” says McMaster University’s Samily Yusuf. He also stated: “We found that it works… It could revolutionize heart disease prevention as we know it.”

That being said, it is still vital for a person to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to continue efforts to prevent or treat heart disease. While the pill may be extremely useful in the effort to combat heart disease, it is a treats heart disease but not prevent it so a healthy lifestyle is still important.
